We all know that Kevin Youkilis and Mark Teixeira made their long awaited returns to the Yankee lineup. But did you also know that another player reappeared in the Bronx tonight? That's right, the real CC Sabathia returned to the mound tonight. After struggling for the better part of two months with both his velocity and his control, Sabathia stepped up and pitched a heck of a game. He lasted 7.1 innings, gave up only one run on six hits, did not walk a batter and struck out 10. Not only were his control and velocity better but his secondary pitches were working tonight as well. His slider made a much needed comeback to his arsenal and he used it to his advantage in those 10 strike outs - in the at bats he finished with a slider, the Red Sox were 1-10 with six strikeouts*.
Offensively, Ichiro Suzuki had a big night, finishing 2-3 with an RBI and two runs scored. Youkilis was 1-4 with an RBI single in his return while Teixeira was 0-3 with a walk and a run scored.
Jon Lester pitched 6.1 innings and gave up four runs on six hits, walked four and struck out five. The Red Sox lone run came in the seventh inning after a Mike Napoli RBI double which scored Dustin Pedroia.
So just like that, the Yankees are back on track and now a game behind the Red Sox for first place in the American League East.
*Thanks to Jack Curry for that stat.
