If he had the goods to strike out 16 Orioles his last time out, Michael Pineda should have been good for at least 9 or 10 Royals last night in the series opener. At least he should have been good for that if he had the same filthy slider he was sporting last Sunday, but that slider was strangely absent from his arsenal and Pineda ended up following his best start of the season with his worst. Because the Yankees have decided to take this week off from hitting, it added up to a very 1-sided loss. Mike Moustakas and Lorenzo Cain got the scoring started for KC in the bottom of the 1st with a pair of back-to-back doubles. They teamed up again for the second Royals run in the 3rd when Moustakas tripled and Cain hit a sac fly to bring him home. Pineda was able to keep KC at 2 through 5 innings, but he really had to battle to do it. By the time the 6th inning came around, he was out of gas and that's when KC struck. A leadoff double and an Omar Infante triple plated another run and Paulo Orlando's follow-up single made it 4-0 and ended Pineda's night.
From there it was the bullpen's job to keep the game in reach and they failed miserably in that effort. David Carpenter stunk, Justin Wilson really stunk, and Jose Ramirez, back in the show again, stunk up the joint something fierce to balloon the lead to 12-1. It was pretty pathetic. The lone Yankee run came in the 4th on an A-Rod double, Teix single, and Big Mac sac fly. Not much else to say really. This one was ugly.
- 104 pitches to get 16 outs for Pineda, a far cry from Sunday's dominance. He couldn't bury the slider down for swings and misses and he didn't command his fastball well in the zone. It happens.
- Teix had 2 hits, A-Rod had the double and run scored, and Brett Gardner tripled in the top of the 1st and got stranded there. The rest of the team had 1 hit.
- Jose Ramirez just sucks, doesn't he? I've been holding out hope that he would put it together once he moved to the bullpen but it doesn't look like it's going to happen.
- I was tweeting about this yesterday, but that bullpen as a whole kinda sucks right now behind Millances. There's just nothing there.
