Game 51 Recap: TOR 4 NYY 1

Man these recaps are a drag this year.  The Yankees just don't give you much to write about when their bats are cold.  They have a whopping 5 runs in their last 3 games after putting up another low score, wasting a great starting pitching performance, and dropping their second game in a row to the Blue Jays.

Last night's great starting pitching performance came from the resurrected CC Sabathia, who threw 6 innings of 2-run ball with 4 strikeouts and only 1 walk.  That first run came on a Justin Smoak solo shot in the bottom of the 4th.  Sabathia left a sinker up just enough and Smoak smoaked it.  The other run charged to CC came after the bullpen collapsed behind him.  He more than did his job again and took the hard luck loss for his efforts again.

That loss should have gone to the lineup.  They got the game's first run in the top of the 2nd on a Chase Headley double, Austin Romine single, and Aaron Hicks RBI groundout.  Outside of that inning, they combined to go 4-30 with 7 strikeouts and 1 extra-base hit against the immortal J.A. Happ and a trio of Blue Jay relievers.  It really doesn't matter who's in the lineup and who's out right now.  This team stinks all day.

It was actually a tie ballgame when CC came out in the 7th.  Joe did the batter-by-batter thing and went to Dellin Betances as soon as CC put the leadoff runner on.  Then normally reliable Betances got 2 outs before walking Devon Travis on 4 pitches and giving up back-to-back base hits to Kevin Pillar and Darwin Barney, the 7 and 8 hitters.  He just didn't have it last night and that was the deathblow.

Game Notes:

- Sabathia's line for the month of May: 26.0 IP, 16 H, 3 ER, 5 BB, 25 K.  That's a 1.04 ERA.  He's been spectacular after a slow start in April.

- 2-hit night for Headley, who just keeps on chugging along.  He hit .298/.355/.440 in May.

- Scoreless inning for Kirby Yates after Betances' rough 7th.

- Teix went 0-4.  This is going to be bad to watch if he ends up playing the rest of the year with a bad neck.
