Once Saturday's action kicks off, we will be less than 48 hours from the trade deadline - it's on 4 PM EST on Monday, August 1. Heading into Saturday evening's game, the Yankees are 4.5 GB of the second Wild Card spot, with a couple of teams ahead of them, as well. Their playoff odds have slipped to 7.7% (as per FanGraphs) since mid-week. It is somehow both comforting and frightening that so much seems to hinge on these next two games.
Saturday's game starts at 6:10 PM, featuring a battle of the disappointments on the mound in Nathan Eovaldi and Drew Smyly (and his 5.42 ERA, which is tied for second-worst in baseball). Though, to be fair, Eovaldi wasn't considered a centerpiece to a trade involving David Price, so the level of disappointment is relative.
And Sunday's pitching-matchup will be Michael Pineda and rookie Blake Snell, who was a consensus top-20 prospect heading into this season. Snell has struggled with his control in his brief stint in the Majors, but he has been quite good in his last three starts - 18.2 IP, 12 H, 7 BB, 20 K, 1.93 ERA. This will be his second time facing the Yankees, who he held to 1 run in 5 IP in his debut. Sunday's game is slated to begin at 1:10 PM.
