20 of 40: A Quick Look at the 40-Man Roster, Looking Ahead to 2020 (Part 1)

In the days and weeks to come, we will share our thoughts and plans and opinions on the current Yankees and their off-season plans and decisions. I will, of course, share my plan for the 2020 Yankees…

But, before we get to that point, I thought it might be fun to just look at the players already on the 4-Man Roster to make a quick assessment as to whether or not I think they’ll be back next year.

Unlike most of my articles, this one is just a quick look at each player. But, to make it a bit more engaging, we’ll look at the players in uniform number order, rather than by positions.

#0, Adam Ottavino – He will return to the Yankees.

#11, Brett Gardner – I believe Gardy will be re-signed by the Yankees on a one year deal (but I wouldn’t be surprised if he is able to get two years out of them).

#14, Tyler Wade – He will be back to fill the same role as he has the past few years shuttling between AAA and the big leagues.

#18, Didi Gregorius – Sad to say, but the Didi Era is over. (When I said this a year ago, people told me I was crazy, but Didi will leave as a Free Agent.)

#19, Masahiro Tanaka – He will return to the Yankees.

#24, Gary Sanchez – He will return to the Yankees.

#25, Gleyber Torres – He will return to the Yankees.

#26, D.J. LeMahieu – He will return to the Yankees.

#27, Giancarlo Stanton – He will return to the Yankees.

#28, Austin Romine – He will leave via Free Agency

#29, Gio Urshela – He will return to the Yankees.

#30, Edwin Encarnacion – The Yankees will not pick-up the team option for 2020 and he will leave as a Free Agent

#31, Aaron Hicks – He will return to the Yankees.

#34, J.A. Happ – In order to make the payroll work in any way shape or form, Happ will have to be traded, and he will be, but for pennies on the dollar. The Yankees will still pay a significant portion of his 2020 contract as part of the trade. A penny saved, though, is a penny earned.

#35, Cory Gearrin – He will not be back, unless he remains unsigned and comes as a non-roster invitee to Spring Training.

#36, Mike Ford – He will return to the Yankees.

#38, Cameron Maybin – Maybin will be back on a two-year deal. With Aaron Hicks having surgery, Maybin will almost certainly be back.

#39, Mike Tauchman – Like Tyler Wade, he’ll be back shuffling between AAA and the Majors.

#40, Luis Severino – He will return to the Yankees.

#43, Jonathan Loaisiga – He will return to the Yankees.

(Part 2, the other 20 men on the 40-Man Roster, comes tomorrow…)

"This charming and meticulously researched book will remind you of baseball’s power to change and enrich lives far beyond the diamond."

From Compton to the Bronx.jpg

"A young man from Compton rises to the highest levels of baseball greatness.

Considered one of the classiest baseball players ever, this is Roy White's story, but it's also the story of a unique period in baseball history when the Yankees fell from grace and regained glory and the country dealt with societal changes in many ways."
