2019 MLB Winter Meetings: Day Four Thread – Lots of News About Cole; Anthony Rendon to LAA

The Winter Meetings will continue until the Rule 5 Draft on Thursday morning (12/12). An event tracker for what will be occurring over the week can be found on the official Baseball Winter Meetings website.

After yesterday’s insanity: Cole to the Yankees (!!!), Didi to Philly, and some smaller deals, it’ll be interesting to see what happens in the baseball world tonight. Lots of big names still available.

That being said, let’s get into it!

 

MLB Signings:


4:29 PM – NY Mets and RHP Michael Wacha have agreed to a deal, pending physical. [Mark Feinsand]

5:15 PM – The Colorado Rockies and RHP Scott Oberg agree to a 3-Year, $13 Million deal. [Bob Nightengale]

5:30 PM – Contract could go as high as 3/$15 or 4/$26 [Ken Rosenthal]

5:45 PM – Blue Jays have agreed to sign RHP Tanner Roark [Ben Nicolson-Smith]

5:51 PM – RHP Josh Lindbalm to the Milwaukee Brewers for 3-Year, $9.1 Million contract. [Jon Heyman]

6:24 PM – Blake Treinen, RHP, is in agreement on a 1-Year, $10 Million deal with the LA Dodgers. [Jeff Passan]

10:39 PM – The Los Angeles Angels have come to agreements with 3B Anthony Rendon on a 7-Year, $245 Million deal. [Jeff Passan]

10:42 PM – With this deal, Superagent Scott Boras has gotten 3 of his clients a total of $814 Million over the past three days. (Strasburg = $245M, Cole = $324M, Rendon = $245M) [Jeff Passan]

10:45 PM – The 2019 will be remembered as the ‘Scott Boras’ winter meetings. With a 5% commission, he netted his company $40.7 Million in three days. Also, Rendon’s AAV ($35M) beats Nolan Arenado ($32.5M). [Jim Bowden]

10:43 PM – How much more will Boras make for his clients? Still has Ryu, Castellanos, and Keuchel. [Ken Rosenthal]

10:45 PM – As expected, there is no deferred money in the Rendon deal. [Joel Sherman]

10:46 PM – Deal includes a full no-trade clause, as well as no opt-out. [Mark Feinsand]

 

Completed Trades:

12:17 AM – The Texas Rangers have traded OF Nomar Mazara to the Chicago White Sox for OF Steele Walker (Class A) [TR Sullivan]

 

MiLB Signings (+ NPB):

10:02 PM (yesterday): OF Adam Jones has signed with the Orix Buffalos of the NPB. This was announced by Adam Jones himself.

10:05 PM – This deal with be for 2-Years, $8 Million with a club option for 2022, and up to $2 Million in incentives. [Ken Rosenthal]

 

The Obligatory Cole Section of Tweets from This Morning:

1:04 AM – Gerrit Cole said that winning a championship was a top priority, even though he loves Orange County. [Joel Sherman]

1:19 AM – If Cole opts out of deal with Yankees, he will walk away from about $145 Million. [Ken Rosenthal]

5:41 AM – Scott Boras says that ‘5 Conversations with Hal Steinbrenner’ plus ‘stories from Andy Pettitte’ helped set Gerrit Cole’s choose New York. (Plus, the money helps too.) [Jack Curry]

10:21 AM – Pirates Pitcher Trevor Williams with the most accurate reporting on the deal: “Imagine never thinking twice about getting guac at chipotle” [Trevor Williams]

12:35 PM – Cole was 100% the Dodgers focus of the offseason. [Dustin Nosler, refering to Rosenthal quote from MLB Network]

12:48 PM – “The Winners and Losers of Gerrit Cole’s Signing With the Yankees” [Ben Lindbergh, the Ringer article]

1:13 PM – The Yankees knew they had an agreement with Cole hours before the official announcement came. Explains why the F.O. was so happy in late-afternoon/evening. (Also goes to show how good they are at keeping reporters at bay with information about moves.) [Andy Martino]

1:15 PM – While going to dinner, Aaron Boone kept quietly pumping his fist in excitement. [Andy Martino]

3:26 PM – The Dodgers offer to Cole was 8 Years for $300 Million (with deferrals). Angels were at 8 Years, but under $300 Million (with deferrals). [Jorge Castillo]

 

Rumors/Speculations:

12:06 AM – The Los Angeles Dodgers shifting focus to LHP pitcher Madison Bumgarner. [Ken Rosenthal]

12:10 AM – Hyun-Jin Ryu has said there is no current momentum on a deal to the Minnesota Twins. Likes the West Coast, but geography isn’t a facotor. [Jeeho Yoo]

1:03 AM – Texas Rangers are looking into 3B Makiel Franco if they are unable to sign Anthony Rendon. [Jon Morosi]

2:08 AM – The San Francisco Giants still in on Madison Bumgarner, have little doubt his deal with exceed $100 Million at this point. [Bob Nightengale]

10:01 AM – The MLB released a report on a study done on the 2019 baseballs, say spike in Home Runs was due in part to inconsistent seams. [Jeff Passan] (link to study in his tweet)

10:26 AM – The Detroit Tigers are interested in FA Catcher Robinson Chirinos. [Jon Morosi]

1:51 PM (yesterday) – The Rangers have also expressed interest in Robinson Chirinos, with mutual interest in a return. [TR Sullivan]

1:13 PM – The Colorado Rockies are listening to offers on 3B Nolan Arenado. He has a no-trade clause, so decision is up to him, but this would greatly influence the 3B market of Rendon, Donaldson, and Bryant. [Jon Heyman]

10:54 PM (yesterday) – The Houston Astros and Cincinnati Reds are looking into a SS Carlos Correa and OF Josh Reddick for SP Luis Castillo deal. [Alex Jensen]

2:18 PM – FA OF Kole Calhoun’s market is solidifying with players of: Blue Jays, Reds, Brewers, and Marlins [Jon Morosi]

2:39 PM – Yankees Coaching Staff Set; New additions: Mendoza to Bench Coach, Matt Blake to Pitching Coach, Tanner Swanson to Catching/Quality Control. [Bryan Hoch]

2:47 PM – LA Dodgers getting pessimistic about landing 3B Anthony Rendon. Texas Rangers heavily involved, LA Angels a potential suitor, Washington Nationals a long-shot. [Ken Rosenthal]

3:11 PM – Chicago Cubs apparently looking for two pitching prospects and a bat for 3B Kris Bryant, expecting him to have 2 years left on deal (which means they are expecting him to lose the grievance case). [David O’Brien]

3:29 PM – LA Dodgers and Cleveland Indians are engaged in serious talks to exchange SS/2B Gavin Lux and RHP Dustin May for SS Francisco Lindor. [Bob Nightengale]

3:30 PM – Add Betances to list of relievers that the LA Dodgers are interested in, in addition to Blake Treinen. [Jorge Castillo]

3:41 PM – Commissioner Rob Manfred said the decision to downsize Minor League clubs has not yet been made. [Grant McAdam]

3:42 PM – Manfred to say that the Astros investigation is the ‘most thorough’ done by MLB commissioner’s office. Won’t give time frame for conclusion. [Joel Sherman]

UPDATE: MLB has done 60+ interviews, and secured 76,000 e-mails during this investigation. [Jayson Stark]

3:50 PM – Manfred says, “When people publicly attack a longtime partner after they’ve committed to confidentiality in a negotiating process, they usually don’t feel too good about that.” about MiLB’s recent stance. [Bill Shaikin]

4:00 PM – Final word from Manfred: 3-Batter Minimum, 26-Man Roster, and 15-Day IL (for pitchers only) all to be implemented in 2020 season. [Pete Abraham]

4:06 PM – NY Mets looking to finalize deal for RHP Michael Wacha. [Joel Sherman]

4:30 PM – DH Edwin Encarnacion has interest from 5 teams in the AL, 1 team in NL, but prefers NL. [Jon Heyman]

4:45 PM – The NY Mets are making a big push towards a 1-Year deal with Dellin Betances. [Dan Federico]

5:11 PM – Yankees expressing interest in FA Catcher Martin Maldonado. Caught Gerrit Cole 10 times in 2019, who had an ERA of 1.57 and opponents hit to a 0.471 OPS in those starts. [Mark Feinsand]

7:26 PM – NY Mets have inquired about SS Carlos Correa. Nothing imminent. [Andy Martino]

7:37 PM – Rick Porcello has apparently gotten a 3-Year offer, but may take a 1-Year deal instead to rebuild value. [Jon Heyman]

7:44 PM – Houston Astros have inquired about Austin Barnes from the LA Dodgers, as their two catchers are free agents. [Jorge Castillo]

8:09 PM – The Rangers and Athletics have talked to the Mets about INF Jed Lowrie; Athletics would want Mets to eat most of the money to do a deal. [Andy Martino]

8:31 PM – Angels looking into trading for RHP Corey Kluber from the Indians. Higher priority is 3B Anthony Rendon, but deal could be worked on later. [Fabian Ardaya]

9:22 PM – Superagent Scott Boras quoted as saying, “More signings could come in hours. Probably later tonight.” [David Kaplan]

9:30 PM – Angels trying to get a Rendon signing done tonight. [Ken Rosenthal]

9:40 PM – The Rangers are out on Rendon, Angels currently working on a deal for the third-baseman. [Evan Grant]

9:59 PM – Rangers wanted Rendon on a 5-Year deal, Boras told them all other offers were for 7. [TR Sullivan]

10:14 PM – Pirates asking for switch-hitting catcher Jonah Heim from Athletics in a potential deal for Adam Frazier. A’s not willing to part with Sean Murphy or Austin Allen. [John Perrotto]

10:34 PM – Word is it will take at least 7/$260M to get Rendon, but nothing is final yet. Looking for a higher AAV than Arenado ($32.5M). [Joel Sherman]

10:51 PM – Premier free agent hitters talent market now moves to 3B Josh Donaldson. Rangers, Nationals, Braves, Dodgers, and Twins all interested. [Mark Feinsand]

10:52 PM – Angels still also looking for pitching help. Interested in Ryu, Bumgarner, Keuchel, (trade) Jon Gray of the Rockies. [Jon Morosi]

11: 34 PM – Yankees “far down the line” on a new contract with OF Brett Gardner!!!! Would be a surprise if it DOESN’T GET DONE. [Joel Sherman]
