About Last Afternoon: Yankees 8, Cardinals 4

Looking for a series sweep over the Cardinals, the Yankees faced Miles Mikolas on the mound. He kept the Yankees pretty quiet in the early innings, but eventually they found their bats. Paul Goldschmidt made a loud return to his former home park, helping drive New York to another late-inning victory.

Quick Stats -

  • Will Warren went 4.2 innings, allowing three runs (only one earned) on six hits and a walk. He struck out three.

  • Miles Mikolas threw five innings and allowed three runs on four hits, five walks, and a strikeout.

  • Paul Goldschmidt went 3-5 with an RBI, a double, and a run scored.

  • Luke Weaver picked up the win, getting the last five outs for New York. He struck out one and allowed one walk.

Player of the Game -

Goldschmidt was the offensive spark the Yankees needed on Sunday, and he delivered.

Notable Performances -

Jasson Dominguez was the only other Yankee with multiple hits. He went 2-5 with an RBI and a run scored.

Clay Bellinger went 0-4, but he hit a hard ball between first and second, which I personally think should have been scored as a hit and not an error, that ended up driving in the winning run for the Yankees.

Better to Forget -

Trent Grisham went 0-4, but he was robbed of a hit in the first inning after a nice play by Masyn Winn.

My Take

  • The Yankees had a few hits that looked like definite homers, but ended up dying on the track. It was good to see the Yankees get a big win and score a bunch of runs without relying on the long ball. For all of this team's faults, their offense can be pretty versatile, and they showed that on Sunday.

  • That being said, they could have put this game away much earlier in the day. New York went 4 for 16 with runners in scoring position and stranded eight runners.

  • That was a great outing by Luke Weaver. With David Bednar likely out after pitching the last couple of days, it was nice to have Weaver take care of business in the eighth and ninth.

  • Jazz Chisholm, Jr. had a mixed bag of a day, though I think it was better than the box score gives him credit. He went 0-3, but picked up a pair of walks, stolen bases, and runs scored. His error in the fourth inning led to a run for the Cardinals, but he made a nice play before the throwing error.

  • After a couple of good series, admittedly against weak teams, the Yankees should be feeling good as they start a big week of AL East play. This team can be especially hard to predict, but they have to be feeling good right now. I hope they can ride this into some even bigger wins against the Rays and Red Sox.

Next Up -

The Yankees have today off as they travel to Tampa Bay, where they will once again be the visiting team in their Spring Training home park. Carlos Rodón will take the mound for the Yankees on Tuesday. He is 12-7 with a 3.25 ERA and 164 strikeouts. As I'm writing this, the Rays haven't named a starter for the game. The Yankees hope to separate themselves a little more from the fourth-place Rays before a crucial series against the Red Sox. First pitch is at 7:35 pm.

"A young man from Compton rises to the highest levels of baseball greatness.

Considered one of the classiest baseball players ever, this is Roy White's story, but it's also the story of a unique period in baseball history when the Yankees fell from grace and regained glory and the country dealt with societal changes in many ways."
