About Last Night: Angels 4, Yankees 0

The New York Yankees lost to the Los Angeles Angels by a score of 4-0 last night, the third straight game in which they were shut out. Here’s a quick recap of last night’s game.

Quick Stats:

W: Kyle Hendricks (5-6): 6 IP, 4 H, 1 BB, 9 K

L: Will Warren (4-4): 6 IP, 6 H, 3 ER, 11 K

It was the seventh time in franchise history that the Yankees were shut out in three straight games, the first time since 2016. Overall, it has been 29 innings since the Yankees last scored a run.

The Big Story:

The Yankees had been shut out in two straight games and had not scored a run since the 7th inning in Saturday’s game against the Boston Red Sox. For starters, they wanted to at least score a run and break the streak.

Warren took the mound for the Yankees and was dealing early on. But in the 2nd inning, Logan O’Hoppe hit an RBI single to score Luis Rengifo and give the Angels a quick 1-0 lead. For a Yankee team that has been abysmal lately, this already seemed like a huge setback for the team. And it did not seem to get any better, as Nolan Schanuel hit a two-run single with the bases loaded in the 3rd to give the Angels a 3-0 lead.

Opposite of Warren was Hendricks, a longtime Chicago Cub who is known for being one of the lowest-velocity pitchers in the Majors. Despite this, he managed to give the Angels six scoreless innings and kept the damage to a minimum. The Yankees were very off-balanced against Hendricks all night and never got into any groove against him.

In the 7th, with the bases loaded, Schanuel grounded into a fielder’s choice to give the Angels a 4-0 lead and his third RBI of the night.

The Angels would bring on three relievers over the final three innings to face the Yankees, only allowing one baserunner the span to secure their second victory in a row.

Player of the Game:

Hendricks made the Yankees look absolutely foolish on the mound, as if it hasn’t been bad enough already for them.

Notable Performances:

Giancarlo Stanton continues to look good at the plate, picking up another couple of hits last night. Schanuel also got three of the four Angel runs to cross the plate. And while it’s a rare occasion to say so, the Yankees’ pitching did another good job last night of keeping the score low. Once again, their offense let them down.

Better to Forget:

Speaking of offense, it was horrendous yet again last night. The Yankees recorded only four hits and two walks and they did not even get a runner to third base.

My Take:

In my 25 years of life, 12 or 13 of which I have watched the Yankees religiously, this may be the worst streak of games I have ever seen, at least when it comes to the offense. Not only are the Yankees not showing patience at the plate, but they are not taking advantage of runners getting on base and into scoring position.

Monday night’s loss was absolutely pitiful to watch, as the Yankees had a runner on second with no outs in three straight innings and failed to push a run across the plate. Last night’s game was not as bad, since the early 1-0 lead for the Angels seemed as if that was already the final score, but it was still hard to watch.

Luckily for the Yankees, the pitching has been keeping them in games. Warren did give up the three runs, but it was one of his better starts this year. The Angels swung and missed at many pitches and he was locating well. It was yet another quality start for the Yankee rotation, and they have absolutely nothing to show for it except another loss.

Offensively, there simply is not much to say. Sure, every team goes through struggles during the season and this is no doubt one of those low points for the team, and may potentially be one of their lowest points in many years. It seems to me as if many players are overthinking their at-bats. Nearly every Yankee has gotten into a swing-for-the-fences mentality, and while I think the team has this mentality a lot, it is really setting in now with how poorly the offense is. Let’s hope that this is their only “really bad” period of offense for the year.

The Yankees also faced polar opposite starters in the first two games of this series. Jose Soriano is a hard-thrower and Hendricks throws his fastball more than 10 mph slower than Soriano. The Yankees also don’t do as well against slower pitchers, and it definitely showed last night.

This team needs an ice-breaker big time. They have not scored a run since Saturday and not led in a game since Thursday. An early run tonight would be crucial and one that I think can re-ignite this team. As of right now, the offense has no confidence in itself, and it clearly shows. The players looked defeated to yet another team that is below .500. I don’t think the players get as rowdy over managers getting thrown out of games as they used to, but maybe it’s worth a shot. Maybe Aaron Boone should be aggressive with the strike zone early tonight in hopes of getting some sort of rally going.

After all, it cannot get much worse. It may be Hope Week at Yankee Stadium, but I think all Yankee fans are hoping that the Yankees can just score a run, and even better win a game.

What’s Next?:

The Yankees will be right back in action tonight against the Angels. Jack Kochanowicz is scheduled to start for the Angels, while Ryan Yarbrough is set to take the mound for the Yankees. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. EST and will be broadcast on Amazon Prime Video.
