The Yankees finally played their first series of the year against the Red Sox. The Red Sox are struggling this season and are 30-35. They are in fourth place in the American League East. The Yankees are 39 and 23 and are in first place. They are now a season high 16 games over .500. Anthony Volpe was forced to leave the game after being hit by a pitch, but X-rays and a CT-scan were negative. Thankfully, he probably will not miss much time.
Quick Stats –
· The Yankees sent nine men to the plate in the first inning. They scored five runs.
· Will Warren wasn’t great, as he tired and lost command in the sixth inning, but he took a step forward after his disastrous outing against the Dodgers.
· The Yankees have 20 first inning home runs this season.
· Aaron Judge had his ninth game with three or more hits this season and raised his Major League leading average to .397.
· When the Yankees score first, they are 29-10 this season. When they don’t score first, they are 10-13.
· For the fifth time this season, all nine starters in the Yankees’ lineup had at least one hit.
· On June 6th, 2013, the Yankees selected Aaron Judge with the 32nd pick, (compensatory round), in the Major League Draft. Before we go crazy about how all those other teams missed on Judge, he was not the Yankees’ first pick. They selected Eric Jagielo with the 26th pick. Other players selected ahead of Judge were Clint Frazier, Austin Meadows, Dominic Smith, and Tim Anderson, among others.
· Yesterday was the 81st anniversary of D-Day.
· Today would have been Thurman Munson’s 78th birthday.
Big Story –
Although the Red Sox looked like they might try to come back, this was a convincing win by the Yankees. They had contributions up and down the lineup and Will Warren was very good through five innings. It was a major step forward after his last outing against the Dodgers. Probably the best news of the night was the fact that Anthony Volpe's injury does not appear to be serious. So far, the Yankees are 3-1 on this homestand and look like they might be getting on a roll. This would be a good time to do so.
Player of the Game –
Jazz Chisholm, Jr. had three hits, including his ninth home run. He also had four RBI and two stolen bases. It's good to have him back.
Notable Performances –
Aaron Judge had three hits.
Anthony Volpe, in an abbreviated game, drove in three runs.
Devin Williams pitched a scoreless ninth inning for the save.
Better To Forget-
Brent Headrick wasn't very good, giving up two runs in one inning but, I wouldn't lose sleep over it.
My Take –
The Red Sox are not a very good team right now. This was their ninth loss in twelve games. They made two errors in the game, raising their Major League high total to 57. Conversely, the Yankees have won nine of their last twelve games, and fifteen of their last twenty. However, there is no guarantee that the Red Sox will not get hot. The Yankees need to beat them while they are down.
The Yankees need to take advantage of the schedule they have in front of them. For the rest of the month of June, the Yankees will play the Red Sox, Royals, Angels, Orioles, Reds, and A's. They will play the last game of the month against the Blue Jays. Only the Royals and the Blue Jays have winning records. This is the portion of the schedule where the Yankees really need to make hay. They won't win every game, but they should continue to roll against these weaker opponents. It is like storing grain for the winter. They need to accumulate wins now when they are more readily available, at least in theory. That way they will be able to withstand the inevitable Boone-Swoon.
Next Up-
The Yankees will play the second game of the three-game series against the Red Sox tonight at 7:35 PM at Yankee Stadium. Garrett Crochet, (5-4,1.98 ERA) will pitch for Boston. The Yankees will send Ryan Yarbrough, (3-0, 2.83 ERA) to the mound. Let's hope the Yankees pull the wool over the Red Sox players’ eyes and are able to knit together another win.
Headrick must roll.
Interesting that the team is 10-10 in terms of winning games where the other team scores first and losing games in which they score first. Likewise, they are 6-2 in shutouts (i.e., where the other team or they don't score at all).
Great to see that someone finally convinced Jazz he doesn't have to swing for the fences every single swing (probably how he hurt his oblique). It's all about putting the ball in play. Id rather see him at 2nd base again, though.
Captain, My Captain. He died on the Jewish sad day of Tisha B'Av. When my teacher, Mr. C. (he didn't think you ask 6th graders to try to call a teacher Chernofsky) the next June, asked me what happened on Tisha B'Av, all I automatically said was 'My Captain died'. Frustrated, he knew I knew the answer, I was literally crying until he finally said, 'OK, what happened religiously?' I told him.
About Eric Jagielo, and Ian Clarkin, picked after Judge - both had talent, but like lots of Yankees minor leaguers at the time, these guys couldn't stay healthy.
As far as last night, I was shocked at just how fast Will Warren lost it last night. Cruising throug…
