The Yankees lost again last night. The Yankees now lose, a lot.
Last night, the Blue Jays defeated the Yankees 12-5.
Quick Note - The writer that was scheduled to deliver the game summary for this morning at the last minute was unable to, so I'm going to approach this report today in a slightly different manner than we normally provide.
There will also be a bonus article posted at 8:00 a.m. discussing Anthony Volpe...
NOTES:
The Yankees have lost the first two games of this four-game series to the Blue Jays
The starting pitchers for the first two games of this series were the Yankees' top two starting pitchers, Carlos Rodon and Max Fried.
In both games, the Yankees had a 2-0 lead before giving the game away
The Yankees are 13-16 since May 30.
Anthony Volpe went 0-for-5 last night. A hard ground ball got past him that helped the Jays take a commanding lead in the game.
Yankees fans are now starting to say, "George Lombard, Jr." when thinking about shortstop in the seasons ahead.
Forgive me if I am not on the George Lombard, Jr. train. This discussion is exactly what fans do, and it is exactly what the Yankees want their fans to do - look forward to the next star they promise to deliver. I am always surprised when so many succumb to this hype. Regarding shortstop during the Boone era, the hype has gone something like this:
Jorge Mateo is the real deal...
No, it just might be Tyler Wade. He's something special. Unique!!!
Only kidding, the real deal is Gleyber Torres
No, take our word on this, and it's a great story... Andrew Velazquez!
Ok, seriously we have two kids that can do it now, each is better than the other:
Oswald Peraza. Or...
ANTHONY VOLPE! He's the next Jeter. In fact, he's better than Jeter already.
Forget the Anthony Volpe hype. Say this slowly, "George Lombard, Jr."
I am not a believer in hype. For far too long the Yankees sell their prospects as the next great thing. Then, when they don't deliver, there are always excuses. What we see very little of are these hyped kids actually becoming quality MLB players - most often even good MLB players - for the Yankees.
As fans, we have seen this same pattern for the last many years. Some readers get frustrated when writers say things like, "Here we go again" as the Yankees begin losing. But it's not just the losing, it's the way they lose - poor fundamentals, lack of game awareness, crazy pitching decisions, bad base running, failure to drive home (or even advance) runners. Rather than getting frustrated with writers who are simply pointing out what is occurring, those fans should be frustrated by the leadership of the organization that brings this same approach year-after-year. It is obvious, it has been obvious for many years, that what the Yankees are doing isn't working.
Aaron Boone has been Yankees manager for longer than any manager in the history of the team without delivering a championship. This level of performance wasn't even acceptable when the team was the Highlanders.
Brian Cashman has not delivered a World Championship since 2009.
It is time for some changes.
Next Up:
The Yankees play tonight to conclude this series. The game will be on a streaming service which is actually, I now realize, a gift the Yankees give to their fans. They hide some games so the fans don't have to sit through these disasters night-after-night.
NEXT UP---- as much as the first two games have been painfully disappointing, the series doesn't quite conclude tonight.
the Yankees remain on foreign soil for two more nights, have a couple of chances to play cuckoo and make deposits in the Jays' nest.
All Arias has done is struggle and that is at Single A. I know this was just an example, but so far he has been a bust.
All true, and very frustrating. I will tell you this much. I've seen lombard play now a few times, he is legit. Last week during an off day, Somerset was on yes, so I watched that game, and he made 2 plays in the 10th that I am not convinced would have been made by Volpe. So the glove is real. Bat wise, he's still developing, so who knows. Based on track record. I'm with you. I pretty sure we both agreed 3 years ago, seager was the move to make at SS. I still feel that way.
But as you stated, this is much more than a ss issue. It is an overall philosophy issue. All you have to…
GLJ 's arm is infinitely better than Volpe's. Volpe doesn't have decent coaching in the Bronx. But let's be honest, Volpe knows the path was cleared for him in 2023, and due to roster construction, there is no threat of him sitting on the bench for more than the odd couple of games during the entire season. I watched Volpe in AA via the subscription, and I can tell you in terms of plate patience GLJ in 2025 is far better than Volpe was in 2022, his AA season.
I don't even know if sending Volpe to the minors as a shock move would really help. I don't think the coaching is there either to help him make adjustments. B…
