A’s 11 -- Yankees 7

The Yankees sent Carlos Rodon out to pitch Game 2 at Sutter Health Park, in Sacramento against the (Oakland?) A’s in front of 12,113 fans that sat in seats, on car hoods and on a grassy knoll on the other side of the outfield walls.

Rodon entered the game with a .151 opponents batting average; good enough for 1st in the AL and an early 4-3 record with a 3.29 ERA.

Rodon pitched good enough to win, but not great. This was not his best effort of 2025, but he did leave with his team up 6-4 after throwing 6 innings.

You can’t ask for more than that, although I would like to start seeing him go at least 7 innings each start.

His one real mistake was a hanging slider to Brent Rooker that was deposited in the left field stands for a 4-0 A’s lead.

The Yankee bullpen coupled with shaky defense and questionable base running ended up costing them in the end, as the A’s rallied back to take the game 11-7, ending the Yankees modest 3 game winning streak.

This was a day when the clear blue sky caused a little havoc in the game, for both teams.

Quick Stats:

Aaron Judge continued his rampage through the league by going 2-4 with two more home runs in his home town game.

Shea Langeliers DH’ing went 4-5 with 5 RBI including his 8th inning 3 run blast off of Fernando Cruz that essentially ended this game.

Big Story:

The Yankee Bullpen showed some holes giving up 7 runs in 3 innings, after their offense stormed back from an early 4-0 lead with 5 runs in their half of the sixth inning.

Unfortunately, the game is 9 innings, and the A’s weren’t done on this day.

Not every day goes as planned. Fernando Cruz who has been a huge asset, simply did not have enough on Saturday.

The game peaked in the 7th inning when Cruz had a chance to make a statement with Shea Langeliers stepping up with 2 runners on.

Instead of preserving the 6-4 lead, Langeliers took Cruz deep and the A’s took a 7-6 lead that they would not surrender.

Every pitcher gives up runs, and home runs. Cruz is no different.

Cruz has been excellent so far this season. Now we will see how he bounces back.

Player(s) of the Game

Shea Langeliers spent his half day off as the DH by being the difference maker and leading his team to victory.

Aaron Judge continues to make the game look easy, by going 2-5 with 3 RBI and 2 more Home Runs.

The A’s 1-4 hitters (Wilson, Rooker, Soderstrom and Lengeliers) went a combined 10-19 with 10 RBI.

Old friend JP Sears went 5 innings giving up 4 hits and 1 run.

Mason Miller stepped up for his 11th save by giving the A’s 1.2 innings while striking out 4.

Notable Performances:

As is the case every game, Aaron Judge was the best player on the field.

His home town crowd seemed to be happier to see him hit a home run, then to see their temporary Tenant’s win a ball game.

I can’t say I blame them. It is no secret the A’s are abandoning their Northern California fans and moving to Vegas.

Las Vegas will be the A’s 4th home city (Philly, KC, Oakland and soon Vegas).

The A’s have been playing in a terrible environment for the last several years, and A’s owner John Fisher has had enough and will follow the Raiders to Vegas.

I can’t say I blame him either.

Better to Forget:

The Yankee bullpen gets to wear the Goat horns.

As I mentioned, 3 innings and 7 runs. They are much better than that, and I am sure they will bounce back.

Not much more needs to be said.

My Take:

The Yankees have been nothing special over the last 10 games, evidenced by them going 5-5.

At approximately the ¼ mark of the season they have apparent issues and holes, but are still 2.5 games ahead and in first place.

I have mentioned it before, right now the roster is fluid, and the team we will see later this summer may very well be different then the team we see in mid-May.

Whether that is a good thing or a bad thing, we will find out.

Players such as Giancarlo Stanton, DJ LeMahieu, Johnny Loaisiga, Jake Cousins and Luis Gil all will be back at some point this season, and who knows what will happen at the trade deadline.

They have a chance later today to take the rubber game and then head off to Seattle for 3 games.

Today’s game can be seen on YES at 4:05 EST.

Happy Mother’s Day.

Replying to

Not surprised when every swing he takes is as hard as possible. Next man up. It shouldn't be too hard to replace him.
