About Yesterday: Marlins Defeat Yankees 2-0

The Big Story

The Marlins made the Yankees regret each choice they had made yesterday afternoon, even ones made over a year before last night’s match was even played. To add to the pain, with each of those bad courses of action came another meltdown that seemingly could spell the end for Yankees manager Aaron Boone.

The Yankees returned to Loan Depot Park in Miami after sustaining the most heartbreaking and gut-wrenching loss in recent memory on Friday night, and yet had a worse game than the one that preceded it. The offense, the only encouraging part of the first game of this series, was nowhere to be found as the “Bombers” put up just two hits throughout the entire nine-inning contest, and as expected, did not plate a single run.

For pitching, the young Cam Schlittler took to the mound again and fired five innings of two-run ball, but with no offensive support, there was no help for the flamethrowing righty. The bullpen also bounced back with three scoreless innings, including one by Jake Bird, who had an abysmal start to his Yankees career on Friday night.

The Yankees' only real scoring chance was in the first when Trent Grisham was on second when Giancarlo Stanton singled to shallow left. Grisham was sent home, but the play at the plate was not particularly close, and he was tagged out much before reaching home.

In terms of Miami scoring, all of it came off the bat of Agustin Ramirez, a former Yankees catching prospect who was sent to the Marlins in the Jazz Chisholm trade. Ramirez tallied two solo home runs on the night, completing the entire scoring line as it ended 2-0 in favor of Miami.

In the midst of the disappointing offensive attack, Jazz Chisholm Jr. also made a costly error on the basepaths when he was doubled off on an infield pop-up. Chisholm later cited the reason for the mistake as being that he expected Xavier Edwards, the second baseman, to drop the ball on purpose, a common strategy in modern baseball; however, that was not the case. Manager Aaron Boone was later seen visibly upset with long-time first base coach Travis Chapman in the dugout, and also let Chisholm into the clubhouse for a short meeting. Chisholm stayed in the game, and Boone later confirmed that he would not be benched due to the matter.

The game was also the most attended of the year for Miami (34,645), which comes as no surprise considering the result of Friday’s game and the high-profile team the Yankees bring into town.

Player of the Game

Augustin Ramirez will take home the honors with two home runs against his former organization to provide the only RBIs of the game for either team.

2-3, 2 RBIs, 2 HRs

Yankees Player of the Game

Jake Bird had an incredible bounce-back outing with two strikeouts in an inning of work to send Miami down in order.

Notable Performances

  • G. Stanton: 1-3

  • B. Rice: 1-3, 2B

  • L. Weaver: 1 IP, 1 K, 0 H

  • T. Hill: 1 IP, 0 H

Better to Forget:

  • T. Grisham: 0-3

  • J. Dominguez: 0-4, 2 K

  • C. Bellinger: 0-4, K

  • J. Chisholm: 0-2, K

  • P. Goldschmidt: 0-2

  • R. McMahon: 0-3, 2 K

  • A. Volpe: 0-3, K

My Take

For two nights in a row, I have been at a loss for words following Yankees games. Now, I will admit that Friday night I was a little more distraught, but getting only two hits against the Marlins are unheard of. The Yankees' offense was the only strong part of the devastating loss on Friday, so to follow up a 12-run game with two hits is embarrassing.

Speaking of embarrassing, the lack of fundamentals on all parts of this team is just that. Baserunning, ground balls, and pitching the ball not down the middle are all things this Yankees team seems to struggle with. Who knows if it is Aaron Boone's or Brian Cashman's or some other person’s fault, but the fact that it does not seem to be getting better is concerning.

The bullpen did give me some hope in this game, however, and with Mark Leiter Jr. making his first rehab appearance last night as well, it seems they could be on their way back to a 100% strength ‘pen.

I think (hope) this game was a fluke offensively… but to know for sure, I guess it is now onto this afternoon!

Up Next

The Yankees will try to avoid being swept as Luis Gil will make his season debut this afternoon after his Rookie of the Year-winning season, while top Marlins starter Edward Cabrera will look to continue his dominance in the 305. The game’s first pitch will be at 1:40 PM on the YES Network from Loan Depot Park in Miami.

Third base coach must be replaced. He waved Grisham home, when it was painfully obvious there was no chance in he** he could score. Tagged out standing 3 feet from home plate! This has happened too often.

The Chsolm thing...wow!

This is little league baseball. No fundamentals at all. Other teams are laughing at them. At this point, I'm rooting for them to lose games, as a means of getting Boone and Cash fired. Also, sell the team to someone who wants to win.

Cashman interviewed him and hired him. Boone eas home in N.J. while the interview happened, then hit called and he need to come in to meet with him. Translation: I need some cover that you were onboard with this hire. You know what I say....

A $300mm third place team. Mistakes all over the field. Sqaure pegs in round holes. A 2nd baseman that can't keep his head in the game, who should have been traded already. Zero accountability. A GM that wastes $ millions every single year. $37mm just on stroman. They are so far away from a legit contender to win it all, its laughable. But, we're expected to Trust the process? They take us for fools. They need to sell the team and bring in new leadership.

Voit was gotten from STL, who kept him buried in AAA, and they could get Bird healthy and made the crazy decision to effectively bury Tyler Austin, off to a decent start in 2018, then got suspected after that fight with Joe Kelly, and never got his job back. Even in limited time in Minny after a trade, he clubbed 7 homers.

Gallo was worth a shot. What I didn't like about that trade was trading away both Duran and Smith in that deal. One or the other, not both.

Stanton - I never wanted him here. Getting him here too many things they were not even going to try to do. If Stanton is not here, does anyone honestly…

Hey, you wanna win, well ya gotta score something.

Schlittler had a better day yesterday, but has shown some things that need to be worked on. Some of those things he's carried with him from the minors too. He has given up the HR ball since coming up. And there are times he just throws and just misses the strike zone, meaning he's throwing extra pitches. He did that in the minors too. Now, what is the 'Great, well-respected Pitching Coach' Matt Blake going to do to help him fix it on the fly?

Before everyone continues to go crazy on the Yankees trading Augustin Ramirez, let's remember who was here at the time of the trade, and what his…
