About Yesterday: The Yankees Were Bludgeoned by the Blue Jays 13-7

By Tim Kabel

October 6, 2025

***

Yesterday, the Yankees were totally dominated by the Blue Jays and their rookie pitcher, Trey Yesavage. Although the Yankees scored some runs late, the victory for the Blue Jays was never in doubt and they have now taken a commanding two games to none lead in the best of five series. The Yankees will limp home and try to extend their season on Tuesday night in the Bronx, where they won four of six meetings with the Blue Jays this year. I'm not sure if that will matter on Tuesday night.

Quick Stats –

· The Yankees gave up more runs this weekend than they did in any two-game stretch in the postseason in franchise history. Think about it. These were the worst two consecutive beatings the Yankees suffered in the entire history of the team. That says a lot.

· Toronto reached double figures in hits and runs for the second straight game, with fifteen hits and thirteen runs yesterday.

· Trey Yesavage set a Blue Jays’ postseason record by striking out 11 in 5.1 no-hit innings. Imagine if he had stayed in the game longer.

· The Blue Jays had more home runs ( 8 ) than strikeouts ( 7 ) in the first two games of this series.

· Vladimir Guerrero, Jr. hit the first postseason Grand Slam in Blue Jays’ history.

· Max Fried allowed seven runs and eight hits in three plus innings. He gave up seven runs in 33.1 innings in five September starts.

· On October 5th, 1921, the Yankees won the first World Series game in team history 3-0 over the New York Giants.

· On October 5th, 1953, the Yankees defeated the Brooklyn Dodgers to win their 5th consecutive World Series.

Big Story –

There is no way around it. The Yankees were absolutely awful yesterday and during the first two games of this series. This is a best of five series. The Yankees are now in a 0-2 hole. In order to advance to the ALCS, they must sweep the Blue Jays. The Yankees allowed 23 runs to the Blue Jays in the first two games of the series. They were battered by Toronto all weekend long. As noted above, the 23 runs the Yankees gave up was an all-time low point for consecutive games in the postseason in the entire history of the team.

It will be very hard for the Yankees to bounce back from these two losses. Will it be impossible? No, there are very few things that are impossible, but it is unlikely. Although Carlos Rodon did have a very good season, he was rarely unhittable. His approach in games very often seemed to be “bend but don't break”. Considering the fragility of the Yankees’ bullpen, it is hard to be very confident going into game three on Tuesday night. Once again, Aaron Boone has no answers and relying on him to inspire the team to victory does not seem to be very prudent.

The Yankees will have an off-day today to prepare themselves for Tuesday's game. Unfortunately, the Blue Jays will also have a day off to prepare themselves. Based on the first two games, it is hard not to like the Blue Jays’ chances. After all, they only need to win one of the next three games.

Player of the Game –

Cody Bellinger hit a two-run home run and drove in three runs.

Notable Performances–

Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton, and Ben Rice each had two hits. Judge and Rice each drove in a run and Stanton drove in two.

Better To Forget-

That this game ever happened. That goes for the first game too.

My Take –

Once again, the Yankees will be facing an elimination game on Tuesday. However, this one seems different. The Yankees did not simply lose two games to the Blue Jays this weekend. They were mauled. It wasn't a boxing match; it was a beating.

I know some people are saying that the Yankees should be optimistic because they scored seven runs in the sixth and seventh innings against the Blue Jays yesterday. That is true but the Blue Jays were leading 11-0 at that point. Do you actually think the Blue Jays would have removed Yesavage when they did and replaced him with a parade of mediocre relievers if they were not leading 11-0? Of course, they would not have done that. For all the euphoria over the Yankees’ attempted comeback, they still lost by six runs. It was a drubbing, plain and simple. So was the first game.

Another school of thought is that the Yankees will play better at home against the Blue Jays. After all, they beat the Blue Jays four out of six games at Yankee Stadium this year. Well, it was convenient for everyone to say that the Yankees didn't have to worry about being beaten in the season series by the Blue Jays once they made the playoffs because it was a clean slate. What happened during the season didn't matter. Well, if that was the case then, it's certainly the case now. Right now, the Blue Jays are like sharks in a feeding frenzy. The Yankees are a portly tourist with zinc oxide on his nose floating around in an inner tube.

The Yankees cannot afford to make any mistakes. I'm not going to get all worked up about Aaron Judge's error in yesterday's game. It didn't really matter in the grand scheme of things. The Yankees have to play dominant, crisp, clean, error-free baseball for three straight games against a team that has beaten them 10 times out of 15 games this season. That same team just destroyed them in two consecutive games. All the pressure will be on the Yankees.

I understand that the Yankees won two elimination games against the Red Sox last week. This is different. Remember, no one expected the Red Sox to do very much this year and for a long time they were under .500. They traded away their best player, Rafael Devers. The Blue Jays are focused, confident, and dangerous. I think I hear the theme song from Jaws playing.

Next Up-

The Yankees will play the third game of the Division Series against the Blue Jays on Tuesday at 8:08 PM at Yankee Stadium. The Blue Jays will start Shane Bieber, while the Yankees will send Carlos Rodon to the mound. For the Yankees, it is win or go home.

I hate to say this, but the Jays just look like the better team and winning 3 is doable, but odds are not in our favor!

As Sonny & Cher would sing, "And the beatdown goes on."

The difference in these first 2 games is simply: Jays SPs pitched well, and the Yankees counterparts didn't. As I said before the WC Round, the Yankees were going to need to ride their Starters if they were going to have a shot.
