Breaking News: Dylan Cease gets out ahead of winter market, signing a 7 Year/$210 Million deal with the Toronto Blue Jays. Tweets & Thoughts inside...

Quick Thoughts:

It's not often that top free agents sign before Thanksgiving, especially not players that are seen as the best at their position.

Dylan Cease was inarguably the top starting pitcher on the market for this offseason.

Behind him, and left on the market are Framber Valdez, Ranger Suarez, Michael King, Lucas Giolito, and Zac Gallen. I won't go into too much detail- as this is a quick thoughts blurb- but each of those guys has more concerns about performance, projections, age, etc. than Dylan Cease had.

Good on the Blue Jays for making an aggressive pitch (pun intended), and grabbing their guy ahead of everybody else getting too involved. I'm sure this deal will catch some franchises- who are waiting for the winter meetings to make major moves- by surprise.

The Blue Jays have often come up short on signing big name free agents in recent years (they didn't get Harper, Machado, Ohtani, etc.), but with their recent World Series appearance and their long-term commitment to Vladimir Guerrero Jr., in addition to having a large and open purse string could turn "the great white north" (no, not the Bob and Doug McKenzie show) into a desirable destination.

Time will tell.

Especially for a guy like Bo Bichette. Does this move move the needle towards a re-signing? Or, does it move the needle away? That will be an interesting story to watch for.

Valdez has the look and feel of a Guy Who Can't Pitch in New York. The Yankees always seem to beat him like a red-headed step-child.

That's why, given the choice between Valdez and King, I'd go with King..

Toronto wanted him, signed him, paid top dollar to shore up the rotation

Cease could have been the 2.0 version of Cole and imagine a rotation of Cole, Fried, Cease, Rodon and Schittler not a bad starting 5? Unfortunately, he's off market.

Yankees will go for either Valdez or King, of the two - Valdez is a far better fit. He'll be pricey though, maybe maybe bigger spending teams like the Royals, the Orioles or the Angels ( all three spend a higher percentage of their revenue to their payroll than the Yankees do) might sign him instead of the Yankees. There's always the Mets too, but I have a weird feeling the Mets are going for Imaga.

Want no part of Valdez. If the Yankees are dead set on signing a SP (and I don't know they are)I want Imai or King, with a one year deal for Gallen as my fallback.

But if they do sign Imai or King to a multi-year deal, the Yankees better turn around and move both Carlos Lagrange (AAA) and Ben Hess (AA) into the Closer role, and start training them for that.

.. ..and I don't really care if Cease or Sonny Gray are in the AL East.

Let's see it play out!
