Breaking: Goldy to NYY!

Breaking News: The Yankees are signing Paul Goldschmidt to a 1-Year/$12.5 Million deal. More to come. Tweets inside...

Rampant Speculation Time:

By: Ethan Semendinger

This will not be the only move that is made in the next 24 hours by the Yankees. I fully expect to see them swing a trade with the St. Louis Cardinals for Nolan Arenado. I would expect the return going back to St. Louis would be Marcus Stroman (for salary purposes) and some secondary pieces. The Cardinals were willing to eat about $15 Million in a rumored trade in the past week.

It was recently reported that Arenado nixed a trade to Houston (via his no-trade clause), but some were saying that he may be buying time to see where his teammate, Paul Goldschmidt, would sign. With the Yankees also in need of a true third baseman, the fits seems almost too good to be true. And, I am not the only person thinking this. As I'm writing this, Bryan Hoch tweeted the following:

What would that line-up look like?

The team would have Cody Bellinger, Austin Wells, and Jazz Chisholm as their lefty bats to surround Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton, Paul Goldschmidt, Nolan Arenado, and Anthony Volpe.

Jeez.

After seeing the light return Cleveland received for Naylor, I’m a little less enthused about this signing. Yanks couldn’t match that offer??

have you reviewed Josh Naylor's all-around game?

he hits HRs and has value on offense, but his defense as a 1B is pretty lousy

his WAR in 2024 was pretty much the same as Goldschmidt's... and Naylor is also only signed for one season.

the Yankees didn't have to give up any players to acquire Goldschmidt...and Goldschmidt may net the Yankees ...another guy.

(BTW, Cleveland replaced Naylor with Carlos Santana.... at a salary only slightly less than that given to Goldschmidt)

Now if the Yankees can get Arenado in a trade they'll win the AARP's Best Off Season Award!

I like it. I think Goldy is a good bounce-back candidate, and there’s not much to lose on a one-year deal. A good guy for leadership and clubhouse culture too.

Goldy is a perfectly fine one-year fit at first base for the Yankees, considering he gives the Yankees a right-handed bat who can hit left-handed pitching. Goldie is preferable to Rizzo in my book and he can help groom Ben Rice at the position.

Many Yankees fans want to The Yankees take a run at Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Next season and so a stopgap strategy is a good move by the Yankees. Goldie is an experienced veteran who is capable of anchoring first base along with Ben Rice in the picture as well.

Personally, I'm not really a fan of Guerrero. I'd rather see the Yankees go for Munetaka Murakami.
