As long as you remember: they're not running it back. With that in mind, the Yankees have re-signed right-handed 1B Paul Goldschmidt to a 1-year deal. Terms were not immediately available. The 40-man roster is full, so a corresponding move will be necessary.
My immediate reaction:
This is a really tough roster fit. Goldy is a 1B-only, with no positional flexibility. He will seemingly be the short side of a platoon with Ben Rice, who has emerged as the 2nd or 3rd best hitter on the team.
Ben Rice also proved that he could handle left-handed pitching adequately. Taking playing time away from him seems...not ideal.
Where does Goldschmidt fit on the current projected 26-man roster? A 1B-only bench bat seems like a really limiting use of a bench spot.
On the plus-side, Goldy is a great clubhouse presence, remains excellent defensively, and can surely help Ben Rice grow defensively.
On the minus side, Goldy's bat sure looked limp by the end of last season. Even with the platoon advantage, he was a singles hitter.
I can't help but think there will be more moves coming before the season starts.
I admit: this just doesn't make a ton of sense to me.

I'm going on record as LIKING this move! Ben Rice is not the platoon partner - it's Jasson Dominguez at DH. Stanton will show up in mid-June, if necessary, and by then Goldschmidt may no longer be necessary. In the meantime, he continues to rake LHP - check out his ball off bat speeds - he was still hitting the ball hard in July/Aug/Sept. He still has a good glove at 1b and will be Rice's regular defensive replacement late in games. He has his uses. Furthermore, if the NYY's limit their catching roster to Wells, backed up by Rice, then they can fit Cabrera and Rosario easily on the roster and they're effectively covered at every position. The …
This gonna be like a DJ Lamieu 2.0 . Clearly Goldy looked washed in the second half of the season. I believe he will be DFA as soon he will see his production goes on decline.
Another waste of a signing by our genius GM. Yet another reason to tune out in 2026.
As much as I loved Goldy playing for the Yankees from April (.878 OPS) to May (904 OPS) of last season, he fell apart in June (.464 OPS) - his number of at-bats steadly declined after his putrid June and his production came back a little bit, but still wasn't good -- July (.708) / Aug (.704) / Sep (.586).
I agree with Andy, I'm stumped as to why the Yankees would bring Goldy back and also, I question his fit on this year's roster as it would appear that he'll potentially block other in-house potential bench pieces.
As of now, Fangraphs projects the Yankees bech to be: Amed Rosario, Paul Goldschmidt and Paul DeJong or Oswaldo Cabrera - with…
Meh.
