Here's the story on MLBTR: https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2026/01/marlins-trade-edward-cabrera-cubs.html

Now, of note - the trade is not finalized. Trades fall through. Things change.
This isn't even to say that Edward Cabrera would have been a good fit for the Yankees.

Please let us know if you are not completely fed up with rumors of the Yankees being close or interested or might possibly make an offer for Player X.
Are there still fans willing to buy into the rumors?
Are there still fans willing to give the Yankees a pass?
Are there still fans that buy into the Yankees' excuse making?
"The offseason is still young!"

Regarding all the talk about the slow market or whatever...
It seems that teams are making trades and signing players:
Other teams are making deals. Other teams are getting better. Other teams are going for it.
***
You know how the market could get interesting for the Yankees?
This is very simple, the Yankees would simply have to sign and trade for players.
They can act. The Yankees can control their own market. They could have been involved in the players who have been traded. They could have signed players who have signed contracts.
Instead the Yankees make excuses. "The market is slow."
This is what the Yankees are today - an organization that makes excuses.
One doesn't need to make excuses when they are winning World Championships.
Winners don't need to make excuses.

Note - We have an article from EJ on Edward Cabrera already scheduled for tomorrow. Whether or not he gets traded to the Yankees, that article will run tomorrow.
It's good information... maybe for Cubs fans, at least.

Two things I know for certain. 1. If baseball strikes it's probably dead for good this time. 2. The Yankees are no longer a championship or bust organization.
I am personally happy that the Yankees didn’t get Cabrera. I don’t have any faith that Cabrera will stay healthy or become anything more than a back-end of the rotation guy.
I also don’t think a starter is that big of a concern, considering the Yankees already have Cole, Fried, Rodon, Schlittler, Gil, Warren through 2028, Schmidt through 2027 and a bunch of quality arms in the farm system (Hampton, LaGrange, Rodriguez, Beck, Selvidge, Hess, etc.). I’m more worried about our lineup and our currently weak bullpen. I’d rather save our trade prospects to use for a reliable setup guy or a right handed bat.
Thank you he's now a Cub. The Cubs also have multiple OF prospects in AAA, so them trading Cassie, who has major swing-n-miss issues of his own, plus 2 lower level bats. The Yankees equivalent would've been Spencer Jones, Juan Matheus, and some kid who was in the DSL.
The funniest thing about what I'm reading from other MLB reporters is that while Cabrera has the stuff to be a #2 SP, he is actually looked at as more of a #4.
It seems to be Bellinger or bust. If they lose out on him, maybe they sign Hays if he is still available and they come back with the same or less than 2025. Hal is not interested in the WS. He is more interested in the contract and inserting a salary cap. He is operating like someone who knows there will probably be a strike in 2027.
