I suggest the reader dives into this in more detail at MLBTR, Shohei Ohtani’s Contract Will Defer $68MM Per Year, but, in short...

Shohei Ohtani will be earning a $2 million annual salary from the Dodgers until his ten-year playing contract ends. Once that contract ends, the Dodgers will pay Ohtani, without interest, the remainder of the $68 million annually for the next ten years.

Amazing.

Somewhere Vida Blue is scratching his head! Manfred needs to step in here. Call me crazy, but this is a scam!

As I said elsewhere, I would welcome an explanation using actual facts and actual reasoning as to why this is a "scam." "I don't believe in Generally Accepted Accounting Principles," or, "Discounted future value for annuity purchases are inherently fraudulent," are neither legitimate facts nor legitimate reasoning. (And I'm not say you are saying this; what I want to know is what you actually are saying, factually and logically.)

My biggest issue is according to Heyman his salary only counts as $28M towards the qualifying offer average of the top 125 players. He’s taking money out of the pocket of other players every year of the contract

Do you have a cite for that? I would think that the salary value would be $48M, that is, $2M base and the $46M future value of the annuity.

If the present value of the contract is $460 million -- that is, it's financially EXACTLY the same as if Ohtani signed a 10-year contract for that amount payable in 10 equal installments during the contract -- anyone who thinks a $46 million AAV is unjust or unfair or a circumvention of the letter or spirit of the CBT rules please explain that thinking with actual facts and reasoning (i.e., "I don't like it," contains neither facts nor reasons).

Yes, but that is because delaying the compensation beyond the years of the contract allows for the 'present value' discounting calculation to be used.

Per the rules, if the compensation is within the contract period, then the full contract value divided by the number of years is used - regardless of the fact that in finance terms, the contract is only worth 600M in present value.

By deferring beyond the contract years, that rule no longer applies and regular present value can be used.
