My Thoughts - YES! Bring back the game. (If the Yankees need pitchers, I'll go out and throw. I'll throw for both teams if they want. Just play the game again. Please!)

***

My Thoughts - I love seeing this, an old time great pitcher in a batting pose. Don't get me wrong, I love the DH. I also love this old photo.

For the record, Mathewson batted .215 for his career.

If I could pick a pitcher from that era to be on my team, I'd of course take Babe Ruth and make him an outfielder, but among the others, I would have a difficult time choosing between Mathewson and Walter Johnson.

***

My Thoughts - Jazz Chisholm didn't make this error because he was doing an interview, but doing the interview and thinking about the fact that he was live on TV certainly didn't help him make the play. ESPN is ruining baseball with these in-game player interviews. They are horrible. They're boring. Nothing good comes from them. At all. We don't need to "interact" with the players. We need to watch them play baseball. More and more I watch baseball on TV with the sound off.

***

My Thoughts - Aaron Boone usually says absolutely nothing in his interviews. I rarely listen to any of his interviews because of this, but I saw this tweet, read it, and, as I was reading it, I thought, "Wow, Aaron Boone is actually saying something. He is taking a stand. Interesting. Good for him. He doesn't like trash talk." And then, he says the opposite, "I don't like it, but it's okay."

***

My Thoughts - You usually don't see graphics like this that shows only these five Yankees, who, it is becoming more and more clear, are the five greatest Yankees in history. DiMaggio's greatness isn't as recognized today, and I fear he'd be left off a Top-Four list, but,as great as he's been, Judge isn't DiMaggio. At least not yet.

***

My Thoughts - This is an awesome photo.

I have said several times that Judge should be given credit for having the hitting stats that he does at a time when hitting is more difficult than it has probably ever been.

as evidence, look at DiMaggio. his best single season BA was .388 in 1939. in that year, I find the NL average is .275, the AL average is .279. it seems to me you should be able to simply average those together to come up with a MLB average of something very near .277

but for argument sake, I will take the lowest average possible and use .275. compared to that league average, in his best year, DiMaggio was .113 better than the league average. but al…

apparently, we were both awake late (not unusual for me) and writing essentially the exact same thoughts at the same time in different parts of the thread.

I calculated the WAR lost from WWII exactly the same way. that is what I have always believed was the best way to make the best guess at it. BTW, if you use the same method with Ted Williams 3 lost years, you add 10.5 times 3 to his career or 31.5 WAR, bringing his career total over 150 career WAR

and I also agree the main takeaway is that we are blessed to have a player in Judge who very much deserves the comparisons to the greatest legends of the game

My thoughts on your thoughts:

-As a youngster living in Jersey in the 60’s, Dad made sure to get us to Old Timers day every year. Man, the greats I got to see! There is NO excuse not to bring the game back. NONE!

-That is a great pic/pose. FWIW, I have a T-206 Mathewson pitching pose with the black cap.

Great as Mathewson was, give me The Big Train.

-“ESPN is ruining baseball.” Could have stopped there. Disagree about the cause of the error. Very well could have been the interview. A player must keep his mind on the game and eye on the ball at all times when on the field.

-When one takes both sides of an…

i do NOT at this time say that Judge is better or that he will definitely pass DiMaggio. what I do say is that it should definitely not be considered impossible.

I never saw Joe D either, obviously.

the one story that sticks out for me about Joe D is that he refused to move from CF when they brought Mantle up. based on everything I have ever seen from you about players putting the team first, I cannot imagine that seems ok for you, but I also do not assume that I have every fact. to my understanding when Mantle came up he was arguably the fastest baseball player of all time and seen as an excellent all arou…

as i DID already admit. the thought that Judge could have made it to the majors before age 25 by going pro at age 18 is speculative and cannot be proven.

by that same reasoning, it is also speculative and unprovable to theorize that Joe D adds 20 WAR and more MVPs. ALL of Joe Ds top 4 seasons were from age 22- 26 with his best being in 1941 when he had 9.3 WAR and won his second MVP

in 1942 he dropped to 6.4 WAR

then he was gone for 3 seasons

in 1946 he had 5.2 WAR

he never again reached 7 WAR. he had 5 more, top level seasons. the best was 6.9 WAR. the ot…

there are other factors making up greatness outside of WAR, but I do not see that Judge is lacking any of those things either. we can ding Judge for not having a championship, but I do think it is hard to compare this era to the era of Ruth or Gehrig or Dimaggio or Mantle. at that time 2 teams made the playoffs and the Yankees very literally did buy almost any player they wanted

it feels like there probably need to be 2 discussions. the greatest, on the field, players and the players who have other cultural or historical or some other value outside of the lines.

the above sentence is the last sentence from my last post before yours. I think your post is in complete agreement with the above sentence.

i DO understand the point you and Paul are making. some players are more than stats on the back of a ball card. Babe Ruth is given a good deal of credit for helping America heal from WWI. honestly I think I would like it more if the world still had those type of heroes. you are correct, it is unlikely …
