QH: Just Short, Yankees Lose 6-5

***

An optimist might say, "Well, they were down 6-1 and they made it exciting..."

Or not.

Will Warren wasn't quite ready for the majors. I thought the Yankees, when losing so many pitchers to injury (Gil, Schmidt, Poteet), should have, at the very least, used Luke Weaver as a "temporary replacement" starter until the others returned. Unlike Warren, Weaver is an experienced Major Leaguer, and before he came to the Yankees, he was a Major League starter for multiple Major League teams. Granted, he did not have a very good record at all as a big league starter, but the Yankees made adjustments with him and turned him into a much better Major League pitcher, and I am sure those adjustments would translate to him as a starter, the same way those adjustments worked with Wea…

the Yankees were and are more in need of good relievers than another mediocre starter.

moreover, they derive benefit from resting Gil

and suddenly extending Weaver would only work to offset the benefit

far better to squeeze whatever they could from Warren, a guy not yet ready but on the cusp.

buy some innings, get Warren a little experience , and not worry as to whether his ego gets bruised as he'll have all of September through next January to get over it.

Weaver has racked up 70+ innings as it is........ and the team surely will want several more innings of relief work from the guy.

and Schmidt is about ready and Gil can take his time.

no urgency.

an optimist might feel moved to mention that the non-third baseman Chisholm, in his as yet brief Yankee tenure, has provided significant, good offense.

I was quite surprised to see that he's batting over .300 as a Yankee

and, as of now, is second only to Judge in OPS

the Yankees should have exited August with no less than 81 wins.

I see. We're saying basically the same thing, except I'm looking mid-June through August. If as you posit, the Yankees should have won two more games in August, I'm essentially agreeing and saying they should also have done that in July, plus one extra win in the second half of June.
