David Bednar secured a 5-out (all strikeouts!) save to secure the win for the Yanks (and Boone's job for another day). We have a new closer.

Forgot Bednar pitching FRI. I'm hoping he will be available before SUN.

What we badly need are 2/3 relievers who can come in with runners on base and NOT let them score.

Bednar had a good outing, though it was still a high-wire act thanks to the umpire (that is, not Bednar's fault). Jury's still out on him and whether he can pitch in New York or only in no-pressure situations like for Pittsburgh.

Many of you know I'm a die-hard Pirates fan and I'm also a Yankees fan. I have watched Bednar perform all season long, he was horrendous to start off the season and he wound up getting demoted back to AAA then he got brought back up. He's been good ever since. He's a good reliever and I wanted the and I wanted the Yankees to get him because he was relatively inexpensive to trade for and I knew this at least a month before the deadline. Now Yankee fans see what he's capable of. But I'm going to tell you right now he's not a five out guy. He's being mismanaged already by the Yankees

it seems to me that NYY are beyond notorious for protecting relievers any more. it seemed painfully obvious that Boone did not want to use Bednar for 5 outs and I would be shocked if it happens more 1 more time this season

this team absolutely could NOT afford to lose a 3rd game in a row after leading very late and more than 3 of the last 6. today was a day when getting it done by any means possible was the correct move

obviously he gets tomorrow off and it will be a shock if we see him friday

I'm working on an article that is long overdue but one of the points I've made in the article is that why did it take Boone this long to install Bednar as the closer? It should have been done immediately. Not only is he a freaking All Star but that's what he does. He Not only is he a freaking All Star but that's what he does. He closes games. Meanwhile, you have Williams who likes to walk a couple guys and then give up home runs. Not a very tough decision. I think a little league coach could make that decision , honestly, yet here we are. What's going on is nothing short of What's going on is nothing…

well i do not think Bednar will close on Friday. after 40+ pitches today it seems incredibly likely they want him to have 2 days off

i would agree that it seems he is the most reasonable choice, but Weaver and Doval can get it done on the days he is out. personally, I like Weaver a bit better than Doval as the second closer
