Quick Hit: Heart Stopping Win

October 18, 2024

***

The Yankees kept scoring and then they kept giving the game back to the Guardians...

But, in the end, the Yankees prevailed.

They have a 3 games to 1 lead in the ALCS.

The Yankees need to win one more game to reach the World Series.

One game away.....

when we consider the performance of the Cleveland team's pitching and defense

we should remember that the yankee offense averaged 5 runs/game during the season.

in the 4 games of this series, Cleveland has held the Yankees to only 24 runs in total

and as I've noted, inefficiency with RISP is not always a fatal flaw

when a team continues to get a gob of those runners into that favorable position, the team can usually afford to get half or even less of them home.

and the Yankees have had more than a dozen guys get on base throughout this series.

you correctly note that the inefficiency of the Yankee relievers has necessitated a good performance by the Yankee offense

but I must call attention to the idea that the Yankee offense has put far more pressure upon the Cleveland relief corps

The Yankees own Clase in this series like the Sox owned Mo in 2004. (If you scroll through the comments in the Game Thread, you'll see where I said I was glad to see Clase again.) Clase had a lot of success this year, but in 2023, IIRC, he blew something like 8 saves, including one against the Yankees. For whatever reason, they know how to approach hitting him. So in this series, 1.1 IP. 4 ER, 27.00 ERA, 1 Loss, 1 Blown Save.

I think both bullpens are gassed. Tomorrow it's Rodon, 5.1 IP, 4 H, 2 R vs. Bibee, 1.1 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 2 ER. I'm liking our chances. If Bibee goes 2 or 3…

Marcus Stroman, in his last (and only) relief appearance for the Yankees, came on and pitched multiple innings INCLUDING the 9th. I kind of like that strategy much better than bringing in a "closer" to pitch the 9th. If a long reliever is "cruising" and getting everyone out, let him just pitch the 9th, too!

one win to go?

seems to me that that Boone's guys won tomorrow's game tonight.

Vogt's Guardians fought as hard, as well as they could and give their last full measure
