Well, that was NOT fun.
I was going to write the following:
"BEN RICE with a HUGE ninth inning blast to (basically) win the game for the Yankees.
The Yankees sweep the Orioles and end the first half in FIRST PLACE.
It is now time to spend, spend, spend, and spend some more. GO BIG. Win this thing and put the team in the best place to reach and win the World Series.
This is it.
The time is now...."
BUT IN REALITY - The Yankees, whose closer has done this far too often, just lost a game they should have won. They end the first half in second place.
The Yankees were a strike away from sweeping, but they lost in terrible fashion. Holmes fell behind hitter after hitter. (It's not easy to throw strikes, it seems.) Anthony Volpe made an error. Alex Verdugo fell down.
The Yankees lost in terrible fashion.
Whatever great feeling they might have had evaporated.
UGGGG.

The Yankees have selected Ben Hess, a right-handed pitcher out of Alabama, in the first round of the MLB Draft tonight. (26th pick over all). Not crazy about his 5-5 record and his 5.80 ERA, but I guess the Yankees must see something in him beyond that won-loss record and ERA.
after the game Holmes stands and answers questions and hides from nothing. and says, "against Mountcastle i did not make a good enough pitch. gotta get it more down and away and put him away." that was the pitch that produced the game ending grounder that was not fielded
a great person and a great teammate!! had nothing but compliments for Volpe and Verdugo and said they are great defenders who he would want behind him every day
he did his job INCREDIBLY well today. his teammates let him down. he takes a LOT of heat from the fans, but he makes no excuses, he never says get off my case. he stands there and takes responsibility and he defen…
wrong.
it's not the great feeling that a fluky win today would have induced
but the fluky loss does not sweep away the bulk of the evidence.
they outplayed the Orioles
they won the series.
they have the better pitching
and it's far more expensive to buy pitchers at the trade deadline than it is to buy a position player.
what I've seen is that both teams are, like all teams, flawed.
One question: How much do we trust Cashman to make the changes that are necessary? Whether it means letting Boone, and/or other coaches go, DFA guys who they don't view as part of the solution, or make THAT big trade?
