Among the arguments for bringing up George Lombard, Jr. was that he had solved Triple-A and he was riding an exceptional hot streak.
Well, the Yankees have a player at Triple-A right now, Anthony Volpe, who seems to have solved that level and is also riding an exceptional hot streak...
This from the NY Post:
Jasson Domínguez joined the Yankees on Saturday from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, where he was on a strong run at the plate — but still not enough to be the hottest hitter on the team.
That title belonged to Anthony Volpe, who entered Saturday having crushed five home runs in his past five games — a span in which he was hitting 12-for-17 (.706) with a 2.527 OPS — and eight in his past 14 games.
Yesterday, Volpe went 1-for-3 with 2 walks, a run scored, and an RBI.
Using the logic that brought GLJ to the bigs, isn't it time for Anthony Volpe to make his return?
Next - if Volpe is recalled, where should he play?
In 132 games, Jazz Chisholm has produced only 1.5 WAR. His OPS+ is 97. Chisholm has been a below league average hitter in 2026. Is second base an option?
Over his last 18 games, George Lombard, Jr. is batting ..200 with just two extra base hits (a double and a triple) and no home runs. For the season, Lombard's OPS+ is 77. Does Volpe deserve a shot at shortstop again?
Lombard plays SS for defense, 6 DRS in 220 innings. Volpe had 4 DRS in twice as many. Caballero has twice as many DRS, but in 2 1/2 times the innings. Lombard was batting 5th because there was no other RH hitter in the lineup who was better. Losing games to make a rookie comfier is an unsound strategy. Since August 28, Lombard has been batting 6th or, in one game, 7th. The last two games, since returning from the injury, he's 0-6 (though with a SF). I'm much more concerned about his physical health (given the Yankees' love of pushing injured players on to the field) than his mental health.

and still make the throws when forced to move right.
Lombard is a good defender.
he may or may not develop into a good hitter, but he is already an educated hitter and reasonably adept at moving base runners.
it may well be true that the organization is asking a little too much of the kid by sticking him in the middle of the order. it is a general truth that breaking into the major leagues is a difficult thing for young men.

well it is too late for my solution. that is water under the bridge, but I will say it anyway. they should have traded Jazz for bullpen help at the deadline.
then let Lombard help the team by providing great defense, which he has even with the error streak. they could have put him in the 9 hole as both Paul and I have stated many times and said go play D! offense from you is a bonus

I'm leaving Anthony Volpe right where he is, and leaving GLJ right where he is. I'd DFA Amed Rosario when Judge is activated. THIS move is directly in response as to how Volpe is playing in SWB. The AAA season is over only a week before the Yankees season is, and I say just let him keep playing 2B/SS/3B like he has these past 2 weeks. There's nothing like game reps.
As for GLJ, The SS/infield defense is so much better now, just leave him. But, I say put GLJ in the leadoff spot. The kid hit leadoff his entire pro career, why does he get moved out of it, when the Yankees simply DO NOT HAVE A REAL LEADO…
