"A young man from Compton rises to the highest levels of baseball greatness.
Considered one of the classiest baseball players ever, this is Roy White's story, but it's also the story of a unique period in baseball history when the Yankees fell from grace and regained glory and the country dealt with societal changes in many ways."

does it matter?
is the Hall of Fame anything more than an attraction for children?
Mattingly was an excellent all-around player until injury sapped his power
he remained a fine defender, but his career crested prematurely.
he remained a good-enough player, a good man, a good teammate in the struggle against the despotic owner and his bordering-on-the absurd-and-archaic set of rules and restrictions/
perhaps he'll pick up lots of sympathy votes from people with fond memories of what he was, for too short a time.
As much as I'd love to see Mattingly in the Hall, the numbers are just not there. While he dominated baseball for 4 seasons (1984-1987) a foolish back injury (wrestling with Bob Shirley in the clubhouse) sapped his power and he was never the same. 46.4 wAR for his career is good but 2200 hits and no rings is just not enough. I truly hope I'm wrong and his character and short domination (and it WAS domination) will get him in. My heart says he deserves it. Oh, and by the way, this supposed anti-Yankee bias discussed below is bollocks.
Definitely maybe.
Don’t see the steroid guys getting in. Will depend on the sentiment of the electors. Do they feel it is their “duty” to anoint someone, anyone? If so, it should come down to Donnie and Murphy.
The numbers are similar. Both were great guys. I think it will be both or neither.
My gut tells me it will be neither. I hope I’m wrong.
I think Mattingly and Dale Murphy have some momentum this year and will be voted in. I see a perfect storm of voting for them as I think there will be low totals for Clemens, Bonds (both received fewer than four votes in 2023) and Valenzuela. There will be votes to be had, and they will go to the sentimental choices, players admired by many, with "plus" character.
I think he will.
