The Big Story
The New York Yankees seem to always find new ways to lose and surrendering six unearned runs on a season-high four errors is certainly no exception. In a pitching rematch of last year’s wild card series in which a slightly younger Cam Schlittler took the Boston Red Sox deep into the game, the Yankees unfortunately fell short defensively this time around, losing 6-3.
New York jumped out to an early lead in the first when Jasson Dominguez ripped a single up the middle to put the first run on the board. Unfortunately, the misery started soon after as two of the four errors came in the bottom of the first on catcher’s interference by Austin Wells, and a botched pickoff by Cam Schlittler. Luckily, no harm was done as a result as the Yankees held the slim advantage.
The next scoring came in the fourth when, now Yankees left-fielder due to injuries, Jose Caballero sent a ball over the monster for a solo shot.
The Yankees held the advantage until the fifth when everything began to unravel, and a rough inning highlighted by a major error by Amed Rosario at third led to four runs scoring on two hits. Schlittler somehow walked away unscathed with no earned runs as a result, but by then the game began to unravel for the Yankees. Former Yankees prospect Caleb Durbin added the definitive blow that inning, knocking a two run home run off of Schlittler.
The Yankees tried their best to claw back as another run was tacked on after a great Paul Goldschmidt at bat that scored Chisholm to bring the lead for the Sox down to just one.
The Yankees bullpen continued chugging along until the eight when Yerry De Los Santos allowed three straight Red Sox batters to reach, including on an error of his own, before Ryan Yarbrough came in and hit a batter and allowed a fielder’s choice. Both plays scored a run and Boston extended their lead to 6-3.
The final chance for the Yankees ended in disappointment as New York loaded the bases in the ninth against Aroldis Chapman, but fell short as Rice grounded out to the pitcher to end the game 6-3.

My Take
What an absolutely ridiculous way to lose a baseball game to a last place team. The injuries are really catching up as Jose Caballero continues to look unnatural in the outfield, Amed Rosario is struggling at third, and more. The offense was not even bad as runs were being manufactured and runners got on base in critical situations, but the Yankees could not dig themselves out of the hole they put themselves in.
A season-high four errors in late June is embarrassing, especially with your ace on the mound in a game that should have been won.
They again stranded eight batters and were 3-11 with runners in scoring positions, both of which seems to be a constant trend with the Yankees year in and year out.
This series is a must win. On to tonight.
