Yankees Trade for Luis Garcia Jr.

Brian Cashman has gone off board. Luis Garcia is a Yankee. Garcia has been one of the best hitters in baseball in 2026:
His OPS is over 1.000 since June 1st. He doesn’t strikeout out. He has a nice lefty pull swing. Given how Rice is in a slump, he might be the best hitter on the Yankees until Judge returns.
The catch: Garcia is basically a pure platoon hitter, with a .918 OPS against rights and .628 against lefties. The Yankees badly need a right handed option before the deadline. Goldschmidt, Rosario and Volpe have all stopped hitting lefties over the last few months.
Garcia has mostly played shortstop and second base in the majors, but was terrible enough that the Nationals moved him to 1st base this year. Maybe the lower defensive burden has something to do with his breakout. I think he plays 1st base, pushing Rice to DH for most games. Rice could use the rest.
He’ll be a useful player next season as well, possibly back at 2nd base. He’ll hit high in the Yankees order against right handed starters even when the team gets healthy. Even if he regresses to his career .773 OPS against righties, that will be a massive upgrade for the game’s worst offense since Judge went down.
In return, the Yankees gave up four players: Ben Grable, Jack Cebert, Yovanny Cruz and Jake Bird. A box of scraps.
It’s a great trade. The Yankees would improve by adding a few warm bodies. Garcia is much more than that right now - he’s leading the NL in slugging! In return, the Yankees gave up a starting pitching prospect that I hadn’t heard of before today. The Yankees grow pitchers like Cebert and Grable on trees and rarely regret trading them. I’m honestly shocked at how cheap Garcia was given how hard it is to score runs in 2026.
But it’s not enough. The Yankees need at minimum a strong right handed platoon bat to pair with Garcia, preferably a catcher and an outfielder. Time is running out.
