About Last Afternoon: Yankees 6, Mets 4

Despite strong offensive output, the Yankees entered Sunday afternoon with a six-game losing streak and three games behind the Blue Jays in the AL East.

With Clarke Schmidt likely headed for Tommy John surgery, the Yankees will need good outings from Max Fried every time he takes the mound. Luckily, they got that yesterday and were able to stop their skid with a 6-4 victory.

Quick Stats -

Max Fried - Giving up three runs on six hits, a hit by pitch, and a walk, Fried picked up five Ks and the win.

Zach Pop - Making his first appearance with the Mets, Pop entered the game in the third inning and gave up three runs on five hits in 1.1 innings and took the loss.

Devin Williams - A hitless ninth inning got Williams the save. He notched a couple of Ks in the process.

Player of the Game -

Clay Bellinger went 2-3 at the plate, picking up a walk as well, but it was his lunging shoestring play in the seventh inning that helped the Yankees clinch the game. Not only was his shoestring catch in left field incredible, but he also managed to gun down Francisco Lindor trying to get back to first for the double play.

Notable Performances -

Aaron Judge and Austin Wells both had homers and accounted for five of the Yankees' six runs.

Trent Grisham went 3 for 5 at the plate.

Tim Hill put together some solid work in relief, going 1.1 and allowing just one hit.

Better to Forget -

Jonathan Loáisiga came into the game after Max Fried started the sixth by hitting Brandon Nimmo. He then gave up three straight singles, allowing Nimmo to score. A double play let another run cross the plate, but was followed by a diving catch by Judge to keep the Yankees' 5-4 lead.

My Take -

After the past week and with the latest injury news, the Yankees really needed this win, and they got it! Here are some thoughts about the win and what comes next.

  • Fried had a solid outing, but the Yankees are going to need more from him moving forward. Especially with Schmidt likely done for the season. Fried almost didn't make it out of the first inning when he disagreed with a pitch clock violation call. Fried made his displeasure known, and Wells and Aaron Boone quickly intervened and were able to keep the pitcher from making an early exit.

  • Jazz Chisholm, Jr. got a much-needed day off, as he has been nursing a sore right shoulder for three weeks. Luckily, the Yankees didn't need his bat yesterday.

  • The Yankees are getting good offense and defense from some key players. Judge had a huge homer, a big sac fly to give the Yankees a much-needed extra run, and made a great diving catch in the outfield. Clay Bellinger also had multiple hits and a key defensive play.

  • I really don't know that the Yankees are going to be able to turn this season around if they don't find more pitching answers. Their offense continues to show up, but the pitching just gets more problematic.

Next Up -

The Yankees have the day off today as they prepare to host the Seattle Mariners in the Bronx. Will Warren will try to rebound from his last start, where he gave up eight runs on ten hits and four walks in only four innings of work. Seattle sends Logan Gilbert to the mound. He is 2-2 with a 3.40 ERA in 10 starts this season. He has racked up 74 Ks in just 50.1 innings of work. First pitch is at 7:05 pm.

in the game thread, i pointed out how amazing I believe the play by Belli is / was. a day later it has not lost any luster

but there has been almost zero mention of the amazing defense from Goldy

we ended the 6th, 7th, 8th with double plays

in the 6th Goldy made a great scoop catch on a very bad throw from DJ to finish the play

in the 7th Belli VERY nearly did it all by himself, BUT Goldy did an incredible job of giving away nothing to the runner and only moving his glove at the instant before the ball arrived

the 8th, Goldy made the entire play himself

the play on the Belli throw is…

Just read this in YAHOO SPORTS-

But, for Mike Ursery of The East Village Times, he proposes a blockbuster trade scenario with the New York Yankees that would allow the Padres to both buy and sell at the MLB trade deadline.

The deal Ursery concocted would have the Padres sending Dylan Cease, Jake Cronenworth, and Robert Suarez to the Yankees. Meanwhile, the Yankees would send Spencer Jones, Forbit Vivas, Rafael Flores, and Brock Selvidge to the Padres.

I

I would rather they not make the playoffs than do this deal. Not sure if it would get them past the first roud and Cease will be in a bidding war after tje season.. Seems llike this is giving up the farm…

Replying to

Cronenworth did play some SS in his first 3 seasons but nothing but 1b, 2b, dh for 3 years. we should NOT try moving him to 3b

i still say make a good effort for Jose Ramirez. if the answer is no it is no but you have to ask!!!

after that I want

Tamar - I'm pretty sure "Clay Bellinger" did NONE of the things you described in this article.

This is another loss if the Mets don't sign and insert a sub-replacement level pitcher current (14.85 ERA and -0.6 WAR on the season, career -1.6 WAR). 5 innings of 3 ERs is fine for a No. 4 or 5 starter, not the guy you look to stopping 6-game losing streaks.

I always confuse Z. Pop with MMMBop and in turn with Kevin Mmahat.

only reason that comes to mind

might be that they wanted a sinkerballer to face a team that is reliant on HRs

Goldschmidt, Judge and Bellinger hit a bit

played pretty good defense

it wasn't Fried's best, but it was just about good enough.
