After entering extra innings with a 1-1 score, the Yankees broke out in the top of the tenth. They were led by Ben Rice who had an incredible day at the plate and clubbed his second career grand slam to give the Yankees the final lead. The Yankees added a couple more runs for good measure and took the 7-1 win as they left Baltimore.
Quick Stats -
Cam Schlittler went 5.1 innings, allowing one run on three hits, one walk and six Ks.
David Bednar threw one hitless inning. He picked up the win, allowing one walk and striking out one.
Ben Rice went 4-5 with grand slam and five RBIs.
Player(s) of the Game -
Rice drove in the game-tying run in the sixth inning, for the only New York run in the first nine innings and then knocked a grand slam in the tenth to put them firmly in the lead. That alone would be enough, but he threw in a couple more hits as a bonus.
Notable Performances -
Schlittler had a solid start, making a statement for his spot in the rotation when the playoffs come around.
Jazz Chisholm, Jr. struck out three times, but he added a solo homer in the tenth to give the Yankees a little more cushion.
Jose Caballero went 2-5 with a run scored.
Better to Forget -
Trent Grisham went 0-5 with four Ks, but he also managed to score a couple of runs.
My Take -
There was a lot to like about the Yankees on Sunday, but they also had 17 strikeouts as a team.
This was the type of game you want to see as we reach the end of the regular season. There were strong performances by the pitching staff, who were able to get out of trouble on a couple of key occasions. On offense, even the players who struggled to pick up hits had an impact.
The pitching really seems to be stepping up. It's been an up and down year for the Yankees' bullpen, but I think they are coming together at the right time.
On offense, while this team struggled to break through for much of the game, they continue to find ways to win and it seems like they are playing with more confidence in the later innings than they did earlier in the season.
Next Up -
The Yankees have today off, as they head back to the Bronx to take on the White Sox. Luis Gil will throw for the Yankees. He has a 4-1 record with a 3.33 ERA and 36 Ks in 9 appearances. Shane Smith will take the mound for Chicago. He is 6-8 with a 4.06 ERA and 129 Ks in 135.1 innings. First pitch is at 7:05 pm.
