About the Off-Season: Resolutions? We Don’t Need No Stinking Resolutions

By Tim Kabel

January 1, 2026

***

We may not need them, but here they are anyway.

My annual attempt at self-betterment or self-continuation, whichever the case may be from item to item has arrived. 2025 was a good year for me, and I hope it was for you. For the Yankees, it was not a very special year. Although the Yankees and the Blue Jays tied for the best record in the American League, the Blue Jays won the division by virtue of the fact that they beat the Yankees in their season series. The Yankees bested the Red Sox in the Wild Card Series but were shut down handily by the Blue Jays in the ALDS.

The Yankees have done little to nothing in the off-season to improve the team and as we enter 2026, they have a lot of holes to fill if they want to return to the World Series. We have and will discuss all of that as we head toward opening day in March. For today, I will share my resolutions with you regarding baseball and other topics.

I Resolve:

·       To not call for the firing of Aaron Boone prior to Spring Training.

·       To continue my “fancy weight loss journey”.

·       To practice what I preach and be patient with the development of young players such as Jasson Dominguez, Spencer Jones, Cam Schlittler, and others.

·       To have my final sore from my edema heal so I will no longer be homebound and can get out into the world and annoy more people.

·       To continue writing for the best website there could possibly be, SSTN, for as long as they and you, the readers want me to.

·       To be a better husband and father.

·       To coin a new phrase to go along with “Boone- Proofing”, “Boone-Swoon”, and “Boone Voyage”.

·       To finish teaching Clancy to fetch.

·       To publish another book this year.

·       To avoid any health complications so I can travel with my family this summer.

·       To pick another player on the Yankees to root for to go along with Aaron Judge and Jasson Dominguez.

·       To complete and polish five more manuscripts to the point that they are ready for publication, to go with the five that are ready at this point.

·       To listen to at least 10 games on the radio this year, which considering the Yankees’ TV broadcast schedule, will not be a challenge.

·       To be less sarcastic. (I give that one about a day and a half)

·       To get a couple more Yankees player T-shirts.

·       To improve my balance and walking to the point where I can go fly fishing, (from the bank as opposed to in the water), with my sons at some point this summer. When it warms up a bit, I will be practicing my casting out on my deck. Perhaps I can catch the little tyke upstairs when he is running around the backyard.

·       To pay more attention to the minor league system of the Yankees.

·       To bake more often when my oven isn't conking out.

·       To try at least one new recipe every month.

·       To write my son Jack notes and letters while he is in Basic Training at almost the same rate that I write articles for SSTN. After all, we spoke every day before he left so, why wouldn't I write him just as often.

Happy New Year, Everyone

"Scattering The Ashes has all the feels. Paul Russell Semendinger's debut novel taps into every emotion. You'll laugh. You'll cry. You'll reexamine those relationships that give your life meaning." — Don Burke, writer at The New York Post

The Least Among Them.png

"This charming and meticulously researched book will remind you of baseball’s power to change and enrich lives far beyond the diamond."

—Jonathan Eig, New York Times best-selling author of Luckiest Man, Opening Day, and Ali: A Life

From Compton to the Bronx.jpg

"A young man from Compton rises to the highest levels of baseball greatness.

Considered one of the classiest baseball players ever, this is Roy White's story, but it's also the story of a unique period in baseball history when the Yankees fell from grace and regained glory and the country dealt with societal changes in many ways."
