Paul, you are a pitcher. am i wrong? when you face a tough batter like Henderson or Adley do you not force them to hit pitches where they have the least potential to do damage?

in the Volpe conversation, you said many times that NOT ONE pitcher can hit his spot EVERY time

well, I would contest that vs Henderson, Holmes DID hit his spot with EVERY pitch. EVERY pitch was on the very edge of the zone

it was tactically smart to throw NOTHING good to Adley

at that point he had given up NOTHING other than balls on the ground. so what if you load the bases with 2 outs

they still need to get TWO grounders through…

Here's the other perspective...

Batter 1: Holmes had him 1-2 and didn't put him away, throwing ball two before allowing a single.

Batter 2: Holmes was behind 3-1 before the fielder's choice

Batter 3: A four-pitch walk

At this point 9 of the 14 pitches he had thrown were balls. That's just not good. No spin can make that good.

Batter 4: A big time strikeout on a 2-2 pitch. But, again, threw a 1-2 pitch way out of the strikezone. That, as I see the location on Gamecast, couldn't have been a purpose pitch. You don't miss on purpose that badly. For a guy struggling, that gets people nervous.

Batter 5: A four pitch walk

At this point, Holmes…

SUCKS a lot losing this game, but only because it was given away by not one but TWO excellent fielders botching simple simple plays!!

Alan might be correct. if Volpe does not look better coming out of the break he might need some breaks. i DO NOT believe for one second he is physically tired, but he might be mentally tired

that said, we won the series and even the Os know they deserved to get swept!

as far as i am concerned this series proves that the Yankees are a serious contender for a WS

the Os are clearly a contender for a WS and we out played them the entire series. YES we have played badly for …

GIVE ME A BREAK!! HOW is this on Clay Holmes?

first batter gets a hit on a nicely hit GROUNDER up the middle. the pitch was PERFECT. it was literally in the furthest outside and bottom location it could be. it was the EXACT same pitch that Henderson struck out on!

then he gets another GROUNDER that should have been a GIDP except the ball was hit SO weakly they could not get it turned

next is the ONLY questionable AB for Holmes. walked OHearn on 4 pitches

OHearn is not a typical 9 batter he is a very good hitter pinch hitting as the tying run

next he throws literally THREE PERFECT strikes to one of the best players…

Pitchers who are wild, as Holmes was, normally do not get the benefit of the doubt on close calls. The strike zone box on my TV clearly showed both the third (low) and fifth pitches (outside) as out of the zone Holmes got two gifts from the umpire in that at bat. You can disagree but I am being honest and objective about what i saw. It doesn't matter what the umpire was doing the rest of the game - he gave Holmes two enormous breaks against a guy who could have easily ended the game right there.

As for pitching Henderson "EXACTLY the way you would PLAN" how do you explain the two pitches that were nowhere near the…

How happy do you think Kjerstad is right now?

You don't appreciate the karmic schadenfreude. Holmes has a severe problem throwing pitches that are nowhere -- NOWHERE -- near the strike zone. On Friday, it was off Kjerstad's helmet. Today, luckily for all concerned, the many non-competitive pitches were in the opposite batter's box. If you're Kjerstad, on the IL with concussion protocol, you're loving seeing Holmes get hoist on his own abysmal control petard.
