***

David Bednar got some huge outs in the eighth inning. He then pitched a great ninth inning.

Trent Grisham hit a bottom of the 8th homer to give the Yankees the lead.

Yanks win 5-4.

Mariano Rivera tore his Achilles tendon during the old timers game. You can't make this up.

Bednar notching five outs was bad the other night. So what does Boone do? He sends the man out for another five outs.

Bednar notching five outs the other night was not at all bad, it was good for the team.

Boone sent him out for another five outs

and again it was good for the team.

if it works as well tomorrow,

it might become a daily event.

Bednar might end up earning a unique plaque in monument park

even if he survives

The Yankees are over-using Bednar. He's not a multiple inning guy, I'm tellin 'ya. Also, looks like the Yankees have done exactly what I said they would do all along, with Judge serving as a DH - they will play Stanton in the field against certain pitching matchups they like. It's about time that they did this too. SO WHAT if he get's injured in the process. They need his bat in the lineup when it makes sense. Yankees don't win today without his 2 RBI's. If he gets injured, who cares - Jones gets a call up. The time is NOW folks. Yankees need to stop playing it safe, they need some W's!

I'd make the argument that they are overusing Williams -- by using him at all in high leverage situations.

Bednar could have been huger if he hadn't blown the save by walking in the tying run after getting ahead 0-2. I concede he may well have elevated himself from Stooge to Inspector Clouseau -- a bumbler who lucks into success. Unfortunately, that has the effect of turning the fans into Herbert Loms [twitch, twitch].

I have to add that I just rewatched the 8th inning. That walk to Walker was one of the most pathetic, gutless, arrogant pitching performances on a single hitter I've ever seen. "I MUST STRIKE HIM OUT BY THROWING THE BALL OUTSIDE THE STRIKEZONE." What a jerk. Maybe throw a -- goshdarn -- strike, you useless Stooge? Bednouseau blew the game, but was saved by Grisham and by not blowing his second chance.
