Quick Hit: Thrown Away - Yanks Lose in Extras

June 19, 2024

***

There will be lots for people to discuss about this game:

Gerrit Cole comes back, but only for 62 pitches.

The bullpen gave up too many runs. This included Clay Holmes who also is not pitching all that well.

Giancarlo Stanton hit a homer against a hard-throwing right hander late in the game. Then he hit the game typing single.

Against a righty, the Yankees didn't pinch hit Austin Wells late in the game. But later, he became a pinch-runner.

After getting hit by a pitch the previous game, Judge didn't play. Will he play tomorrow?

The Yankees' pitchers plunked two Orioles. Was that retailiation? Will the Orioles plunk a Yankee now tomorrow?

Should Jose Trevino be catching? He cannot thow out runners any longer. And he's been throwing balls into the outfield far too often of late.

Are the Orioles better than the Yankees? Thus far in 2024, the Orioles are 4-2 against them.

Full game summary at 6:00 a.m. tomorrow.

Boone sounds like a complete fool at his presser. I get him wanting to protect his players, this time Trevino, but he said the same thing, that we all picked up on, that he said in the in-game interview on SNB, but we al know no reporter will follow up on it without risking his or her job - once again, Trevino had a problem gripping the ball on the exchange before the throw. He didn't clear the batter that caused him to throw the ball into LF? I'm assuming this wasn't even the 200th time in his life that Trevino had a RHB when I runner tried to steal 3B.

Further, for Boone to admit that Cole's max pitch…

It's not even if he can throw anyone out, but he needs everything perfect to have a shot with his weakened arm. Someone tonight asked if Boone was concerned that his throws are 4 MPH slower than last year? Boone obviously said no, but again brought up the issue of him getting the grip on the ball was a problem again. At this point, then put Trevino on the IL and call up Carlos Narvaez. Oh, in throwing mechanics, Trevino is dead last, or in the bottom 3. Wells? Just in the top 50% for both pop up and throwing speed.

Actually Paul, the bigger question is why play Trevino if you're only going let Cole go only 4 innings? Rice caught Cole's first rehab start. 🤔

With Gil tomorrow, hopefully Wells gets to catch as it's a 4pm start.

If Trevino can't grip the ball properly on the exchange when dealing with an attempted steal - those are Boone's words, not mine, then he shouldn't be allowed to be behind the dish. DH him, play him at 1B, put him on the IL if his hand is bothering him.
