The Tuesday Discussion: Boone Yes or No?

October 13, 2026

We decided to make this easy for our writers, it's a simple Yes or No question...
Should Aaron Boone return as manager for 2027?
Here are their replies:
***
Paul Semendinger - No
***
John Nielsen - Not just NO… HECK NO! Aaron Boone has had every opportunity to deliver a championship in the Aaron Judge era. How many more chances does he deserve? Judge’s prime is too precious to waste. Enough excuses. Enough disappointments. It’s time for a new manager!
***
Ethan Levine - No. It's time for a fresh face, a fresh feel, and a fresh philosophy,
(Editor's Note - Ethan has a longer piece coming tomorrow a 1:00 p.m. that this answer is but a small part of.)

Tim Kabel - Boone Voyage!
***
Ed Botti - No
My honest appraisal of Boone, although it is not very popular in Yankee circles, is that he is not a terrible manager. In fact, his record during the regular season speaks for itself. It’s very good. I believe that there are 3 types of managers in MLB. Excellent managers, effective managers, and inferior mangers. I put Boone in the effective manager category. He wins a lot of games during the season and guides his team to the expanded playoffs annually. However, after 9 seasons of post season disappointment (not all his fault), I believe that it is time for a new voice and a new approach. Is there an excellent manager out there that they can get? I don’t have that answer. But after 9 years, I would be willing to give another person a shot. They could go the proven winner route, such as Alex Cora – but apparently, he is not interested in a 2027 job. Or they can try what Milwaukee did with Pat Murphy and hire a manager that has put in his time at lower levels and give him a shot. In that category, Shelley Duncan, who has just completed his 8th year, and 1,000th game as a manager in the minor leagues, comes to mind. I am against doing what Cashman did after 2017 when he replaced Girardi and give an ex-player/broadcaster a shot that has never managed anywhere before (sorry Jorge Posada). I believe the next manager should have significant experience as a manager and have strong teaching skills. Ties to the Yankees would be nice but not required. Another name that comes to mind is Rob Thomson. He did a very good job in Philly, and I believe he also would have turned them around as Mattingly did this past season. He kind of got screwed by Dombrowski, IMO. He was a loyal soldier for the Yanks for 28 years. If Francisco Cervelli had more time managing, I would interview him as well, but he only has 2 years’ experience (he has done a remarkable Job with Italy). Maybe down the road.
But to answer your question, I believe Boone should be replaced. Not because he is a bum, but because a new voice and culture is needed.

Cary Greene - No,
Unless Derek Jeter is shockingly hired to be the next Yankees skipper, Aaron Boone will likely be back. We do this every year and it's hardly worth thinking about these days. Should he return? No way. He should have been returned to the broadcasting booth, where he's best suited, several seasons ago. Cashman will be back and he didn't like working with Joe Girardi, which is why he brought in Boone, who is far better at pacifying the overly needy Yankees media. My dark horse candidate, assuming Jeter isn't interested and Cashman wouldn't rehire Giradi, would be John Flaherty. I'm not sure about Shelly Duncan, can't say one way or the other. Don Mattingly may wind up being available also, but it's all a moot point. Boone will return and we all know it.

has Hal said a single word yet, since the season ended? too busy dreaming of MLB getting a salary cap?
ONLY Hal will fire Boone. Boone is far and away the biggest blemish on the career of BC!! certainly, he has made other mistakes, but he does a many things much much better than Yankee fans give him credit for. Boone alone, however, is reason enough for BC to get the chance to GM for another team
as i have said MANY times, unless Hal is going to be a better owner, it is very likely that the next GM finds it hard to do a much better job than BC did. real changes really need to begin with Hal.
Let me be the next in a long line to beat this horse with a emphatic YES ... how many chances does he get? Will it happen?... NO and we all know why!
If Brian Cashman is still the man in charge, having complete autonomy, and never having to justify anything to ownership, then it doesn't matter if the manager is Aaron Boone, or anyone else. Cashman didn't want a real manager when he was replacing the already decided to let go of Girardi even before the start of the 2017 season.
Replacing Boone at this point and having things significantly different cause way too many questions for Mr. Cashman. BC doesn't like have even the hard questions being asked, let alone attempting to answer them.
Analytics is the Law here, their Ten Commandments. Any real manager would want a say BEFOREHAND for who is on his coaching staff. Fact is, a Boone…
Boone should have been fired years ago. His teams, despite their talent, underperform in clutch situations. They need a new culture, a new voice.
