***

This week we asked our writers if they would be caring about or watching the All-Star Game.

Here are their replies...

***

Derek McAdam - Out of all the major All-Star games, at least baseball’s is still a competitive game where the players are still trying their best (or at least it looks like it). It’s also the only All-Star game that I do watch. Since I’ll be at a concert tonight, I will miss the game. But if I was free, baseball would be on and my attention would be turned towards that.

***

Lincoln Mitchell - No. I have not watched the ASG in decades. Interleague play and ever-expanding roster sizes have made it unwatchable for me.

***

Paul Semendinger - I have never watched an All-Star Game. I've seen parts of the games, but I've never felt compelled to watch an exhibition game. Even as a kid, I was never really interested in the All-Star Game.

***

Ed Botti - Watching the all star game is ingrained in my DNA. It goes back to the pre inter league days. When it was interesting to see players that never play against each other, play 1 game for bragging rights. All players would wear their real uniforms,  and we'd see unique 1 on 1 confrontations. Situations like Clemons vs Gwynn. Maddox vs Edgar. Gooden vs Mattingly. Mariano vs Bonds. Etc. That was compelling and interesting. Now?  Not so much. That is what a diluted marketing plan did for MLB. The uniqueness is gone. It's not special any more. Its just a buy one get one half off sale at Sears, or a blue light special at K Mart.

But, I'm a lifer.  I'll always watch.

However,  I draw the line at the silly HR derby. No thanks.  I'd rather watch paint dry.

***

Andrew Hefner - I do certainly have interest in watching but I am lucky enough to be overseas right now so I don't know if the 2 a.m. wakeup is realistic...

I love the all star game normally, though, and I have watched it every year (especially when the Yankees are well represented). There were certainly some surprises this year with Misiorowski being picked as an All Star, but I think that bringing back that each player wears their team's jersey and little traditions like that will overshadow the controversy. Enjoy the festivities!

***

Cary Greene - I'm absolutely watching what is the only All-Star game in professional sports that I have any interest in - which is the MLB All-Star game being played tonight in Atlanta at Truist park. Admittedly, I'm a big Paul Skenes fan and I think it's pretty remarkable how dominant he's been since becoming the Pirates defacto ace! Skenes opposing Tarik Skubal makes for a pretty intriguing first inning! Watching all of the festivities and seeing all the star players competing in the same game is always fun as well so, no doubt, I'll be tuning in. Who knows, maybe Aaron Judge will hit a dinger like Giancarlo Stanton did a few years ago -- that would be fun to watch too!

***

Tim Kabel - I no longer have any interest in the All-Star Game and I will not be watching. As much as I love the Yankees and baseball, the All-Star Game has lost its magic for me.

***

Mike Whiteman - The All-Star game has always been special to me, and something to look forward to. I still remember “trash talking” with my NL team fan friends that the American League would win. I used to be very invested in my favorite players making the team. I loved voting for the players when I would go to games (remember when they would hand out ballots?) and was very serious about my selections.

The game isn’t what it used to be. The players (those who show up) don’t seem to want to win like they used to. Interleague play has watered down the rivalry of the leagues. The game has always been an exhibition, but it feels even more so now.

That being said, I’ll turn it on and watch it tonight. I mean, it’s still the All-Star game!

OMG, Home Run Derby to decide the All-Star Game??? What a parody of baseball! This is actually worse than Selig's tie game. This is as bad as the stupid "shoot-outs" that end tie soccer games. Baseball taking a page from the stupidest, most tedious sport on the planet. Disgusting.

While we're at it, how in the world does Boone not put Judge and Raleigh in the stupid derby??? Like he doesn't think they can hit home runs??? FIRE BOONE NOW!!!

Just flipped over to find Derek Jeter prostituting himself for a gambling company. Ever since his "I am the Yankee shortstop" tantrum when they traded for Rodriguez (a vastly superior defensive shortstop), I've suspected that Jeter, deep down, is a jerk. Does he need the money that badly to get in bed with baseball gamblers? Willie and Mickey, as casino greeters, probably did need the money since, unlike Jeter, they didn't make $265 million in their careers; moreover, neither of them ever promoted betting on baseball. Derek Jeter is scum. Whoever that HoF voter is who left him off the ballot was prescient and deserves a medal.

Maybe if Skruball spent more time focused on pitching and less time jawing with the TV booth, he'd give up fewer runs. Just a thought.

"A young man from Compton rises to the highest levels of baseball greatness.
