The 100th day of school for the kindergarten class of 2003-04 occurred long ago.
But, in some ways, it seems it was yesterday.
In a few weeks many of those small kids will have graduated college.
Time passes.
All too quickly.
All…
Too…
Quickly.

When my son Ethan was in kindergarten, he was already obsessed with baseball. He loved the sport. He loved the players.
When the teacher stated that the students would have to create a project on a poster board representing a collection of 100 items, Ethan knew just what he wanted to do.
His dad was only too eager to help.
“Lets make a baseball themed poster!”
So Ethan and I sat down to create a list of his 100 favorite players.
The names Ichiro and Hideki Matsui were the first to appear.
El Duque and Andy Pettitte…
Jeter, Bernie, and Mariano Rivera soon followed.
Ozzie Smith made it. So did Nolan Ryan.
With dad’s encouragement, Graig Nettles and Mike Pags were soon added.
Jim Abbott.
The Babe, Joe D., Roger Maris, and the Mickeys (Mantle and Rivers) also.
Ted Williams joined the team.
Ethan Allen too.
On and on we wrote.
When we ran out of players, we added teams.
Soon we were printing out photos from the Internet, finding Dad’s old Fleer team stickers, and even adding some baseball cards.
Each photo or team sticker was numbered and a key to the chart was added.
I kept that fun poster board as a happy memory of Ethan’s earliest days in school…

This morning the hot water heater gave out.
Water was everywhere.
It found Ethan’s old poster.
It was ruined.
I took a photo of what had survived before I set it out with the recycling.
I was more than a little sad…
