On this day in 2001...
I still vividly recall that day, and the feelings of fear, anger, and uncertainty. I also remember the goodness and bravery on display. How blessed are we all to have public servants who run towards danger. Heroes among us.
Never forget.
Quick Stats: The Yankees are 84-62 on the season, second place in the American League East, three games behind Tampa Bay. They have the second best record in the AL, and fifth overall in MLB. They are 6-2 in September.
Big Story: The Yankees jumped out to an early 2-0 lead when Luis Garcia Jr. homered in the first inning. After the Rockies got one back on a Kyle Karros home run in the second, the Yanks added a couple more on an RBI single by Anthony Volpe and a sacrifice fly by Cody Bellinger. It was 4-1 after two innings.
Yankee starter Max Fried, still building back from his injury layoff, labored but held Colorado to only one run until his exit in the fourth after 80 pitches. Mike Fulmer came on and finished out the inning. The Yankee pen held Colorado in check the rest of the game, allowing only two runs over the last five innings.
The Yanks blew the game open in the seventh, with a two run single by Spencer Jones and a grand slam from Volpe, in his first game back from AAA, playing his first MLB game at second base. The Rockies loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth with no outs, but Luis Gil worked his way out of the jam and the Yanks had the series sweep.
Yankees 10, Rockies 3.
Player of the Game: Volpe had three hits and five RBI on the night. What a storybook return from the minor leagues.
Notable Performances: Garcia is slashing .299/.336/.530 in Pinstripes since his acquisition at the trade deadline. He has 30 home runs and 91 RBI total for the season.
Better to Forget: Jasson Dominguez was hitless and made an error in right field.
They Said It: Great interview with Volpe before the game. A real example of a good attitude after setbacks. Volpe's an easy guy to root for.
My Take: We can't get overly excited about sweeping a bad Colorado team, but this is turning out to be a pretty fun stretch drive. Things seems to be coming together. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the Yanks are within shouting distance of the Rays when they come into town for a four-game set starting September 22. The baseball season is such a grind, and hopefully we all will be rewarded for our relative patience this year with a strong finish to the regular season and a postseason run.
Next Up: The Subway Series is back on - this time at Yankee Stadium. Carlos Rodon (5-3, 3.09) takes the mound against Nolan McLean (11-8, 3.06). Start time 7:05 pm.

Just read that Jasson Dominguez was sent back to AAA. With both an open 40 man and active roster spot, is activating Clarke Schmidt the move?
It's September 11. Mets are at the Stadium tonight. Neither side will wear their team caps in the field tonight. Lee Greenwald will be in the house too. So many emotions going through me, just like everyone else here.
How many people here had Spencer Jonrs hitting even .230 if you told thrm he's hsvr started 60+ games? After his 3 hit game last night, in his 62nd start, he'd now hitting .255.
Who put together Luis Gil's pitching plan? When he started pitching up in the zone, he had success... too bad too many pitches that were below the belt until the bases were caroded?
Austin Wells had 3 BBs?
I was hoping that Judge would be the DH a bit when he came back, because since Ben Rice's injury, on about May 3, he's hitting something like .230. I also believe we will learn after the season he never really was healthy since.
