Over the next many months, I am going to review the credentials of several former Yankees.
Together, we can discuss if we believe that they are deserving of being included in the Hall Of Fame or not. I hope you read along and give me your opinions.
Note - Some people currently in the Hall Of Fame are not specifically in for their merits as a player alone. For instance, Joe Torre didn't get in until after his success as a manager. Phil Rizzuto made it after a career as an announcer. Overall, their careers were definitely deserving. Similarly, Bill Mazeroski was generally considered a light hitting middle infielder, however, one iconic moment got him enshrined. I will be including some of these type players too for us to discuss.
Today we are going to be looking at...
Johnny Damon...
He played for seven different teams during his 18 year career. Four seasons he played for the Yankees.
His 56.3 WAR ranks 150th among position players and is higher than Hank Greenberg and David Ortiz.
He had two seasons above 5.0 WAR.
He was a two time All Star and won two World Series.
He was the second player since 1900 to have three hits in an inning.
He was also the second Yankee to go 6-6 in a game.
He scored 100+ runs 10 times.
He ranks 32nd in runs (1,668)
50th in 2Bs (522)
55th in hits (2,769)
68th in SBs (408).
Another victim of an overcrowded ballot, he received only 1.9% of the ballots in 2018.
