AFTERNOON DISCUSSIONS:

---

ON STEVEN KWAN (& GRISHAM)

For years, the Yankees have needed a true lead-off hitter. Just this year alone, the Yankees have tried 6 different guys in the lead-off spot. Last year, it was 7. In 2023, they tried 10 (!) different guys. That's absurd. Luckily, there is a fix available. A top tier defensive player, a consistently above-average bat who hits for a high average and has two more years (after this) of control. Steven Kwan would be a perfect fit for this team. Now and in the future.

Meanwhile, Trent Grisham is not a future stud for the Yankees. He's having a remarkable season that stretches well beyond the back of his baseball card. Right now is the time to trade him. He'd return a pretty penny (especially if reports that Luis Robert Jr. are not for sale are accurate), which could be used in the deal for Kwan.

It won't happen, but if I was in the Yankees front office, he would be my number 1 target over the next 4 hours.

ON DAVID BEDNAR:

YES! YES! YES! YES! YES!

THE LAFAYETTE COLLEGE GRADUATE BECOMES A YANKEE!!!

I AM SO HAPPY! I HAVE A NEW FAVORITE YANKEE!

Bednar comes with 2 years of control and has now helped the Yankees become a 3-headed monster in the back-end of the bullpen, along with Devin Williams and Luke Weaver. However, both Williams and Weaver can become free agents after the season, which makes the extra year of control a very important factor for Bednar.

In the trade, the Yankees moved on from their No. 8 and No. 14 prospects, catchers Rafael Florez and Edgleen Perez, respectively.  This is not a huge loss, as the Yankees always have a ton of catching depth. Additionally, outfielder Brian Sanchez is also in the deal.

Considering the returns for other top relievers, this is a great deal for the Yankees. (And I am SUPER pumped!)

ON JAKE BIRD:

Roc Riggio was the Yankees No. 10 prospect, while Ben Shields was the Yankees No. 28 prospect. Decent give, but not the worst given the relief pitcher market.

I don't know much about Bird, but he has had an ERA+ of 100 (or better) in the last three seasons while playing with the Colorado Rockies. The Yankees have been looking to bolster their bullpen, and this looks to be a solid move. Hopefully he gets better with the change of scenery. (Don't look at his ERA!)

He also comes with 3+ years of control. That's a good thing!

ON THE TWINS:

I'm just going to put it here with about 30 minutes left.

Cashman would win the trade deadline if he pulls out a blockbuster for the Twins remaining good players: Joe Ryan, Willi Castro, and Griffin Jax.

...and Willi Castro is going to the Cubs. That's fine. Get Ryan and Jax.

Permit me to lead with this: FANTASTIC DEADLINE COVERAGE ETHAN!!!! GREAT JOB! You were ON IT all day today. And Paul, yesterday -- again, it must run in the family! We appreciate all you do!!

There, I said what we all probably think & feel about our SSTN anchors!! Am I wrong?

Now, on to the moves. I like the positional moves, based on what was available and not having to give up much to get the pieces involved.

The bullpen moves get a solid B+ on account of Bednar and Doval. Bednar is lights out and Doval is literally a strikeout machine. Not sure on Bird, would have passed on aquiring him, would love him to prove me wrong…

YES totally agreed on appreciation for Ethan and Paul. THANK YOU!

regarding Jake Bird, I think there is a more than solid chance he ends up being the best pitcher we added today

I do not know where people find these things, but it is my understanding that if you look at the STUFF rankings, his stuff is ranked as some of the very best in the game.

in all that i have read, the belief is universal that he gets better playing for a different team

Folks, its a wrap, but before I retire let's just hint at this. Next year's Yankee outfield? What does it look like? Does Spencer Jones bat behind or ahead of Aaron Judge?

well the first BIG question there is do we have Bellinger back. my gut feeling is that we do. EVERY position for 2026 is covered if you assume that Jones IS ready to have a starting job in 2026

in that case they need NOTHING. they have no need to sign any FA or spend any money. EVERY position will be covered

I am trying to think what money comes off the book?

Stroman 18 mill

Goldy 12.5 mill

Grish 5 mill

Williams IDK is it 6 mill

Weaver IDK

Leiter IDK

I am guessing there is a little more coming off, but it seems they are cutting somewhere between 45 and 55 million

they can easily re sign Bellinger…

Peraza still in the locker room post game. meredith interviewed him and unsurprisingly he is all CLASS!!! I have NEVER seen or heard anything from him but total class total good character. he was VERY EASY for me to cheer for and i would have loved to see him find a way to stick around

also no surprise at all, Caballero tells Meredith that he grew up a Yankee fan. Jeter

WOW, I think NYY paid more for Duval than anyone else. not a complaint, just surprised.

we sent Vrieling and Rodriguez, plus Parks Harber and a LHP De la Rosa

we cleaned out our top ranked catcher prospect but we kept all 3 of the top guys. i have heard good things on Harber and I am always shy about giving up LHP

again ZERO complaint. just surprised the last guy was arguably the most spendy))

More likely just redundant. With Wells/Rice & Escarra in tow, exactly how much opportunity was there for another to break through to the Bronx? I'd say about 1 chance in 20. So move them and convert them into what you need!

i think Caballero led the AL in steals last year and he has played SS, 2b, 3b, RF, LF, CF

and he is not a FA until 2030. that is a pretty solid addition for a guy who was clearly never going to be given a shot to play for the Yankees

In fact, Caballero has played every position except catcher this year, including mop-up pitcher for an inning.
