About Last Night: Yankees 3, White Sox 2

The New York Yankees defeated the Chicago White Sox last night by a score of 3-2, taking the first two games of a four-game series. Here’s a quick recap of last night’s game.

Big Story: The Yankees came into last night’s game with a 1-0 series lead after taking Monday night’s game by a score of 9-5. In that game, Max Fried did not give the Yankees a great start, but the bullpen came in and did a fine job. Cole was sent out last night in hopes of giving the Yankees a split series in a worst case scenario.

In the 2nd, the Yankees rallied together to push a few runs across the board. Jasson Dominguez and Trent Grisham led off the inning with a pair of singles, before Anthony Volpe hit an RBI double to give the Yankees a 1-0 lead. After Jazz Chisholm Jr. struck out, Max Schuemann hit a two-run double down the left field line to extend the lead to 3-0.

The White Sox had their best opportunity to score in the 4th, when the White Sox put runners on 1st and 2nd with no outs. Colson Montgomery flew out and Andrew Benintendi grounded out before Colee walked Braden Montgomery to load the bases for Tristan Peters, who flew out to end the inning.

There were not many other scoring opportunities for either team, but Cole managed to go six scoreless for the Yankees. And while it was not his best start overall, that’s what an ace can do for any team: give them a solid pitching performance.

The Yankees’ bullpen trio of Angel Chivilli, Brent Headrick, and Bednar came on to close out the game for the final three innings, each taking care of three outs each. Chivilli and Headrick came on to do their job, and Bednar came in in to close the game. With a runner on first and two outs, he gave up his first run since May 18 when he allowed a two-run home run to Meidroth. However, pinch hitter and former Yankee Everson Pereira struck out to end the game, giving the Yankees a 3-2 victory.

Player of the Game: It is a tough decision to give this to any individual, but Cole was the best player out there last night. I would say he pitched fine, but not great. And yet he still gave the Yankees six shutout innings. That’s an ace for you.

Notable Performances: Chivilli and Headrick both proved to be reliable bullpen assets yet again and Dominguez was the only Yankee last night with multiple hits. For the White Sox, Tyler Schweitzer did a fine job in giving Chicago three shutout innings in relief to close out the game, saving the bullpen for later on this series.

Better to Forget: Bednar still got the save, but definitely didn’t want to give up that big home run.

My Take: There isn’t much to say about this game, except that it’s great that the Yankees took the second game of this series and can only walk away with a split series at worst. They had an explosive offensive night on Monday and settled for only three runs last night, but still managed to walk away with two wins.

Cole looked solid throughout his start, with the exception of the 4th inning. And even though he managed to load the bases, he still kept the score at 3-0. Cole has had several solid starts since his return, even though he has more losses than wins this season. That was an ace start last night, and even though he may not be the current ace, he brings that ace mentality every night.

I have to shout out Dominguez, who continues to get on base from the right-handed batter’s box night after night. He has really stepped up his game in right field and at the plate and I am rooting for him to continue his solid play. He is one player that I hope the Yankees hold on to at the deadline.

Overall, this was a solid win for the Yankees. Not much action happened throughout the game, but a win is a win at this point in the season. The Yankees have their current ace going tonight, and are looking for the series victory.

What’s Next?: The Yankees will be back in action tonight against the White Sox in hopes of taking the series. Cam Schlittler will be taking the mound for the Yankees, while Davis Martin will take the mound for the White Sox. First pitch is scheduled for 7:40 p.m. EST from Rate Field in Chicago, Illinois, and will be broadcast on Amazon Prime Video and MLB Network.
