Breaking News: Devin Williams has signed a 3-year deal with the New York Mets. Tweets and thoughts inside...

Tweets:

Quick Thoughts:

The New York Mets really are the place where Yankees relievers go to finish their careers. Devin Williams joins the likes of Clay Holmes, Adam Ottavino, Dellin Betances, and many others in recent years.

On the other hand, it was in the 2024 playoffs that Pete Alonso broke Devin Williams.

If you can't beat 'em, join 'em.

Williams is now just hoping and praying the Mets bring back Pete too.

That's a LOT of money and time for a 31-year-old two-pitch reliever who put up negative WAR last year, whose control and fastball velocity were down, and who looks like he may be a Guy Who Can't Pitch in New York.

it's a generous salary for a guy who is going to pitch 60 innings/season, even if he racks up strikeouts.

perhaps the Mets think that they're going to give Diaz a nice raise, retaining his services, and have a solid hope of locking down late-in-the-game leads.

Williams was an odd fit with the Yankees.... he never looked comfortable nor did he pitch like he was.

As the offseason began, I was hoping the Yankees would sign Phil Maton, but the Cubs swooped right in and grabbed him -- kudos to their leadership team for making such a good move to fortify their bullpen.

I was also hoping Devin Williams would sign elsewhere and I got my wish on that front! Yay! Didn't like watching Williams pitch as he always made me too nervous. Just think, the Yankees very likely changed their facial hair policy on account of him too. He might be remembered for that and that alone, based on his body of work in New York.

Hopefully, Cashman knows what he's doing this offseason, he certainly needs to reinforce the Yankees bullpen. Robert Suarez…

Like you, at the start of FA I hoped for a bullpen re-construction featuring Maton and Suarez. Was thinking Williams might be amenable to a pillow contract from the Yanks for a year at around 10/11mm to re-establish market value.

But, it only takes one. It was a perfect storm in Williams’ favor with old Milwaukee executive Stearns combined with Cohen’s checkbook.

That money is best spent elsewhere. Suarez should be a top priority. His addition may make Fairbanks a luxury, but if he will accept set up money rather than closer’s then jump on him also. Otherwise, given the fungibiliy as well as volatility of the species, there are many other good relievers who can provide what Williams gave…

Yankees made weaker. Williams pitched well an an 8th inning guy the last half of the year. 2.50 ERA in his last 19 appearances. I was hoping he'd be retained. What's the plan Cashman? Cashman, are you there? Hello?

Stearns has connections with Devin back with the Milwaukee days. I think Edwin Diaz isn't signing back with the Mets. Williams will be their closer for 2026.
