Breaking News: Atlanta Braves Sign Cole Hamels to 1-Year, $18 Million Deal
Earlier today, Jeff Passan of ESPN reported on Twitter that the Atlanta Braves have agreed to terms on a 1-Year, $18 Million with Left-Handed pitcher Cole Hamels.
This move now makes the 4th signing from the Atlanta Braves, coming after two deals for relief help with signing Will Smith (3 Years, $40 Million), Darren O’Day (1 Year, $2.25 Million; w/ 2021 option), and a deal for catcher Travis d’Arnaud (2 Years, $16 Million).
This now also places the Braves as the top-spenders on free agents so far in the beginning of the 2019/2020 MLB offseason, agreeing to a guaranteed $76.75 Million with 4 different players. (Keep in mind this doesn’t include extensions, restructured contracts, or agreements before players reached free agency.)
Next closest comes the Chicago White Sox with their $73 Million deal to get Yasmani Grandal (C), then the Cincinnati Reds with their $64 Million deal to get Mike Moustakas (3B). Both of these were 4-year deals.

The Cole Hamels deal makes a lot of sense for Atlanta. Durable, excellent makeup, stuff hasn’t lagged as he has aged. And because he has never been given a qualifying offer, Atlanta could QO him and either get a draft pick or a return engagement if he has another strong season. — Jeff Passan (@JeffPassan) December 4, 2019
