Breaking News: Padres Trade for RHP Yu Darvish (Tweets Inside)

The San Diego Padres have taken the MLB offseason by storm this week with three major moves in about 24 hours time. They have cemented themselves in a “win-now” position and have used a Top farm system in order to acquire good to great talent in a slow moving market. We discussed last week ideas about trading for Blake Snell and Yu Darvish, both of whom are now donning the occasional pinstripes in San Diego.

Tweets inside. While Snell and Darvish deals are pending physicals, it seems as though they are done on paper.

Tweets:

The #Padres are getting catcher Victor Caratini from the #Cubs in the Yu Darvish trade. Catcher Luis Campusano is staying in San Diego and is not part of the deal. — Bob Nightengale (@BNightengale) December 29, 2020
Zach Davies is going from San Diego to Chicago, according to a source. The trade will also include multiple prospects https://t.co/RqX4f4DM7Y — Dan Federico (@DanJFederico) December 29, 2020
Sources tell me that there are still moving parts in @Cubs@Padres deal involving Yu Darvish. But I’m told Zach Davies plus several prospects are in deal going to Chicago, including 2020 2nd-rd @MLBDraft pick Owen Caissie. — Jonathan Mayo (@JonathanMayo) December 29, 2020
It’s close. May even be done. Hearing Zach Davies, 17-year-old SS Reginald Preciado (Padres No.11 prospect) and 18 year-old OF Owen Caissie (No. 13) headed to Cubs as part of Yu Darvish deal. Davies the one major leaguer going to the Cubs. Deal also involves two other prospects — Kevin Acee (@sdutKevinAcee) December 29, 2020
Cubs and Padres continue to discuss Darvish deal, but I’m hearing there are “moving parts” involved that could include yet another Padres trade. With multiple deals, multiple players involved, medicals, etc, a source said there seem to be “a lot of balls in the air” right now. — Mark Feinsand (@Feinsand) December 29, 2020
The other two are Ismael Mena and Yeison Santana. https://t.co/Ks9GPmsw6E — Jeff Sanders (@sdutSanders) December 29, 2020
Sources confirm to @dennistlin, @PJ_Mooney and me that the full deal is Yu Darvish and Victor Caratini going to the Padres and the Cubs receiving Zach Davies and prospects Reginald Preciado, Owen Caissie, Yeison Santana, Ismael Mena — Sahadev Sharma (@sahadevsharma) December 29, 2020
I believe I got bad info on this part of the deal. Looks like the deal was a salary dump on the Cubs part. My apologies on that https://t.co/I3ySXXeK3c — Dan Federico (@DanJFederico) December 29, 2020

The Trade:

Going to the San Diego Padres:

Yu Darvish (RHP)

Victor Caratini (C)

Going to the Chicago Cubs:

Zach Davies (RHP)

Reginald Preciado (SS and Padres #11 Prospect)

Owen Caissie (OF and Padres #13 Prospect)

Ismael Mena (OF and Padres #15 Prospect)

Yeison Santana (SS and Padres #16 Prospect)

*Information about the Cubs eating salary was a mistake made by Dan Federico which has been corrected.

"A young man from Compton rises to the highest levels of baseball greatness.

Considered one of the classiest baseball players ever, this is Roy White's story, but it's also the story of a unique period in baseball history when the Yankees fell from grace and regained glory and the country dealt with societal changes in many ways."
