Game 89: Reds (41-45) vs Yanks (54-34)

Writer's picture: Philip CashierPhilip Cashier

It's a sad state of affairs when the Yankees have to play a salvage game at home against the Reds.

Volpe dropped from lead off -- but he really needs a rest.

Rice gets next crack at lead off.

DJ sits!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

While I'd love to see some Yankees fireworks, this lineup is more constructed for, at best, a sparkler.

De La Cruz, SS -- .251

Candelario, DH -- .240

Steer, 1B -- .239

Fraley, RF -- .274

Marte, 3B -- .167

Martini, LF -- .203

Maile, C -- .182

Benson, CF -- .191

Montas, 3-6, 4.23

YANKS

Soto, RF -- .300 (183)

Judge, DH -- .318 (216)

Verdugo, LF -- .241 (96)

Torres, 2B -- .223 (86)

Volpe, SS -- .256 (99)

Wells, C -- .213 (91)

Cabrera, 3B -- .234 (79)

Swept at home by a team under .500...9-15 in last 24 games....they look like 2023 out there.

Try 5-14 in the last 19 games. One more loss to a .250 winning percentage -- that's the '62 Mets right there.

Rice takes a called strike three right down the middle.

Again, this game was over, but wouldn't you rather have Soto up in that spot? This is two games in a row where the leadoff man made the last out.

(granted Soto can't hit a 4-run homer with no one on, but you get the bigger point)

I hope when the Reds leave town, they leave India behind.

Someone take this team to Denny's because they're toast.
