In my analysis I have yet to come up with a proper way to evaluate pitchers across the MLB. The unfortunate thing is that there are far too many to analyze in a simple method for The Determinator, nor would splitting up by rotation or bullpen order truly point out the best (think: if a team had Cole and DeGrom they would find themselves on two separate lists).
However, I still want to highlight the work of MLB Network with their picks for Top-10 Starting and Relief pitchers going into 2021.
The Shredder:
The Shredder, from MLB Network’s Top 10: Starting Pitchers
The Shredder, from MLB Network’s Top 10: Relief Pitchers
Key Notes:
The Shredder has one Yankee on each list: Gerrit Cole (#2 SP) and Aroldis Chapman (#7 RP). Both of these guys are the best for each respective position for the Yankees, so their placements make sense.
It does seem that The Shredder is much more willing to buy into short stints of excellence (see: Dinelson Lamet; James Karinchak) as opposed to consistent success over time (think: Zach Britton). I would think Britton should’ve been on the relievers list, especially after his great play in 2020.
It is hard to admit the Yankees have a big drop off after Cole in the rotation and though I wasn’t expecting to see a second Yankee starter, the Dodgers having three (Bauer, Kershaw, and Buehler) is scary for NL teams. Hopefully, Luis Severino can come back to the form we’d want and he could be a borderline case going into 2022.
