Volpe…the kid seems to be maturing faster than I expected. He looks calmed and in control at the plate.

Hopefully he can keep it up…it’s been fun to watch.

This is one of my joys as an old fan: Watching these new guys come up, establish themselves, show what they can do, and seeing the progress of their careers. Judge is the best recent example. I hope Volpe's the next.

The biggest surprise so far is Alex Verdugo being a lot less productive in the lineup than I expected. I think that will change as the Yankees start facing weaker pitching staffs like the Miami and Oakland pitching staffs they will soon see. But I expected more out of Verdugo, but using that baseball cliche again, it has only been a "sample size" so far. But if the present trend continues, it may be Verdugo who loses playing time when Jasson Dominguez is ready to return and not Giancarlo Stanton, as many have proposed.

7-2. That's the surprise. Volpe's and Cabrera's hitting, and unfortunately, Judge's and Verdugo's hitting.

I'm surprised by the amount of offense on offer so early in the season

given the quality of the opposition's starting pitching.

I believe that the secret ingredient is the willingness to walk.

9 games, 41 runs scored

and an AL-leading 40 walks.

when you're a kid they may try to tell you that a walk is as good as a hit

but that's not really true

and doesn't feel as good

what is true is that a walk is almost nearly close to being as good as a hit

and feels a heckuva lot better than making an out

That was exactly how those great Yankee teams of the late 90's used to win so many games. Even in the World Series, they would face the Atlanta Braves starting pitching staff, who were recognized around the majors as the best starting pitching staff in all of baseball. Yes, the Yankees managed to beat the Braves anyway, simply by making the Braves starters throw a lot of pitches, thus getting the Braves starter out of the game as early as possible, and then getting into the Braves bullpen which was not nearly as good as their starters were. Then, they would beat their relievers, guys like Mark Wohlers who didn't have much success at all against the Yankees. The …

"A young man from Compton rises to the highest levels of baseball greatness.

Considered one of the classiest baseball players ever, this is Roy White's story, but it's also the story of a unique period in baseball history when the Yankees fell from grace and regained glory and the country dealt with societal changes in many ways."
