Readers' Thread: Greatest Game?

July 28, 2024

***

Here is this week's question:

It is amazing how a great win can excite a fan base. Last night's win was so much fun.

What baseball games do you recall as the most exciting you have watched (on TV or in person)?

Please share your respectful comments below.

It had to be the "Bucky Dent" division playoff game (Yankees vs Red Sox) in 1978.

I was on a ship sailing from Portland, Maine to Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, listening to the "Bucky Dent game" surrounded by all Red Sox fans. I was the only one on that boat who was sporting a pinstriped Yankee replica jersey with the interlocking NY on the chest. I was listening to the game on my transister radio with Red Sox broadcasters calling the game. How all those Red Sox fans screamed and shouted when the Red Sox were leading 1-0.....and teased me about it! The Captain of the ship even announced on the ship PA system that the score was Red S…

I went to a private school in Manhattan that was majority Jewish (including me), or at least seemed that way. That's why I'm surprised we were in class that day.

In person, Game 2, 1995 DS. Mattingly went deep. Loudest building i have ever been in, and I saw zeppelin!

Many great ones on tv. Game 6 1986 world series is up there. El Duque in 98 vs tribe in ALCS was a great one.

1994 Rangers playoff game 7 vs devils. Stéphane Matteau game winner still gives me chills.

1986 NFC championship, Giants over Redskins 17'-0. I was there!!

I've been insanely blessed/lucky to have seen a number of the greatest Yankee post-season games in person (and it's not like I went to most of them, usually one and rarely two per post-season). In chronological order (how could I rank these otherwise?):

1976 ALCS Game 5 (Chambliss's home run)

1977 WS Game 6 (Reggie, Reggie and Reggie on three straight swings of the bat; oh, and Yankees win the World Series with that game)

1978 WS Game 3 (Down 2-0 in the Series, Nettles saves the day with several plays that would make Brooks Robinson proud)

2000 WS Game 4 (Jeter leads off with a HR, Yanks never look back; who did let the Dogs out?)

2003 ALCS Game…

So many on TV, like game 5 of 1976 ALCS vs Royals.

In person, maybe 2001 WS game 5 vs D-backs.

From Compton to the Bronx.jpg

"A young man from Compton rises to the highest levels of baseball greatness.

Considered one of the classiest baseball players ever, this is Roy White's story, but it's also the story of a unique period in baseball history when the Yankees fell from grace and regained glory and the country dealt with societal changes in many ways."
