"A young man from Compton rises to the highest levels of baseball greatness.
Considered one of the classiest baseball players ever, this is Roy White's story, but it's also the story of a unique period in baseball history when the Yankees fell from grace and regained glory and the country dealt with societal changes in many ways."

I love the idea of Wells in the leadoff spot. Among the more traditional "speed" candidates from the expected 2025 Yankees lineup - Chisholm, Dominguez, and I suppose Volpe, none have a history of particularly high OBP and all are free swingers lacking the necessary discipline to hit effectively in the leadoff spot. In contrast, Wells had a .370 obp in the minor leagues over nearly 1300 PA. Even more notably, during July and August 2024, Wells had an OBP of .390 over 168 PA. If you're not going to bat Judge in the leadoff spot - another option for the Yankees, to maximize his PA - I think Wells is the IDEAL candidate to be consistently on base …

You still have to figure in the Luxury Tax impact the Yankees now face. At their current payroll level (including Cole) the Luxury Tax is 110% of additional salary added. When you offset the LT impact, the Yankees only add about a $12.3m cushion, far short of what would be required to take on Montgomery's contract. If my math is right, the Yankees would have to spend close to another $20m in 20…
